Miami’s Art Basel Presents Zamna from Tulum
Mother Tulum and her cohorts of the jungle venture to Miami for Art Basel 2022.
Miami Art Basel: a week-long rendezvous that meant different things to different people. For some, it was the promise of touring galas from Munich, Tokyo, London, New York City, all corners of the Earth… For others, it was the promise of live events, world-renowned musicians, and touring immersive electronic music spaces. Whatever your flavor, the pop-up Zamna event at Islands Gardens – an outdoor greenery nestled near the bay and overlooking the city skyline – was one for the books.
Upon walking into the venue, guests meandered through a palm-frond-ladened labyrinth, a micro jungle. Neon lights illuminated the path as hundreds of art patrons prepared for this dimension’s departure, preparing to do loop de loops to the second star on the left and straight on until morning.
The lineup was stacked. Eran Hersh played first, then Jonas Saalbach, Mathame, Artbat, and finally Camelphat. Each set was unique yet synchronized, and universally transcendental. Each artist brought their own spice yet all sets transitioned through movement after movement, a seamless evolution and climb. The visuals were minimalist but also impactful, heavy on strobes and lasers, trippy NFT-lookin’ shorts that had the crowd doing backflips.
When speaking on their annual festival, worldwide brand, and tour, Zamna shared insight regarding the thesis beyond the madness. “Zamna Festival is the annual event that brings together the most important musicians and lovers of electronic music in Latin America… in the paradisiacal Tulum in the incredible Mexican Caribbean, where nature, the spirit of freedom and the best production technology coexist, generating important links between clubbers from all around the globe and positioning, in just 5 years of history, the Magical Town of Tulum as one of the essential ‘hot spots’ for dance music…”
Although this was Zamna’s first year hosting an event at Islands Gardens, we suspect there will be many more to come.
