BTSM addresses Shambhala set controversy

BTSM responds to the Shambhala controversy over opening a portal during the changeover music before their set.

Black Tiger Sex Machine posted a statement on Instagram this week addressing recent online criticism from an Instagram user who claimed they had opened a portal. Further stating that this portal was the reason that people went missing from the Pagoda stage, including a person in their group.

BTSM wrote, “If we were able to open a portal by playing changeover music we’d do it,” referencing the music played between festival sets. Online sleuths discovered it was the score from the movie Eyes Wide Shut. From there, BTSM lays out exactly who they’d send through it, writing, “We’d make sure all the climate change deniers, racist f*cks, transphobes, homophobes, conspiracy theorists, extremists, you name it, get ejected into another dimension.”

The Instagram user who raised this is @vexa.vocals in a since-deleted post. After deleting the post, they crafted a long post saying their friend went missing after confronting the stage manager about how demonic the changeover music was. The friend was found a few hours later near the Pagoda stage with a branding on her tongue and no memory, and the fear that they had been assaulted. 

BTSM continued their post writing, “Which dimension you might ask? The education dimension: a place where they can learn about history, art and science, where they can learn how to manage their anger and their fears.” Later continuing on to say they will continue to say “That’s what we’d do if music could open portals. But it unfortunately can’t. For now, we’ll keep writing our manga, make music, play shows, do meet ups and speak up against injustices online. Love you guys.”
