Mikey Lion reveals getting sober inspired him to have more children
Mikey Lion has opened up about sobriety, fatherhood, and growing his family.
Mikey Lion took to social media in a candid post, sharing that nine months of sobriety changed his perspective on fatherhood and ultimately made him realize he wanted to have another child.
The San Diego-born DJ and producer is best known as a co-founder and central figure behind Desert Hearts, the house and techno collective that grew from an intimate gathering in the Southern California desert into a festival, record label and global community. Lion has remained at the center of the movement throughout its growth while establishing his own career as a DJ and producer.
In his recent video, Lion revealed that for a long time, he didn’t think he wanted another child. While he absolutely adores his son, Finn, the idea of adding another baby into the mix of his already busy life once felt overwhelming. However, he shared that sobriety completely changed his perspective on being a dad.
As Finn began growing out of his toddler years, Lion said he was hit with the realization that he would never get this version of his son back.
“I will never have this little version of my son again,” Lion said.
He reflected on the duality of raising a toddler, describing the experience as both “magical” and “impossible,” but ultimately incredibly rewarding. That reflection also led Lion to look back on the beginning of his son’s life and recognize that he wasn’t always as present as he wishes he had been.
Before getting sober, Lion said there were moments when he could have been “more present, more clear, more locked in” with his son. Rather than simply dwelling on the past, the realization shifted the way he thought about the future and the possibility of expanding his family.
“I want another baby. I want another toddler. I want to experience all those little moments again,” Lion said.
When Lion shared those feelings with his wife, Alex Cookie Leon, he discovered that she felt the same way and was equally ready to grow their family.
“I don’t just want a life for myself. I want more life in my family. I want more time with my family. More memories. More moments,” Lion shared.
His reflections come just weeks after Lion and Cookie announced that they are expecting a baby girl, adding another chapter to a period of major personal change for the longtime Desert Hearts figure.
Lion summed up the impact sobriety has had on his outlook in the caption of the video, writing, “sobriety gave me a clarity I didn’t know I was missing 💗.”
