Basement NY’s new policy claims anyone who enters with smart glasses could be banned
Basement, NYC’s techno institution, has cracked down on privacy-infringing smart glasses to further protect its patrons.
The New York City techno institution, Basement, has formalized its stance on smart glasses. Smart glasses have become increasingly popular in recent years, and in tandem with their rise, they have also contributed to an alarming decline in personal autonomy, safety, and privacy. Basement has always prohibited recording or taking pictures on the dance floor and inside the venue. The club updated its strict policy in response to the disturbing presence of wearable devices capable of discreetly capturing footage of strangers, potentially leading to harassment of the subjects.
Basement’s advanced stance on privacy completely prohibits the use or possession of inconspicuous recording devices. Unlike a phone held up on the dance floor, camera-equipped glasses are deliberately subtle and nearly impossible to notice when in use, creating repeated violations of personal privacy. Basement’s policy is “Our no photo / no video policy exists to protect the privacy, safety, and freedom of everyone on our dance floor. Devices that allow discreet recording are incompatible with that policy. Anyone bringing smart glasses into the venue, whether wearing them or carrying them in a bag, will be asked to leave and may be permanently banned.”
Opinions galore were found in the comment section. @urbankowboi wrote, “Normalize calling out friends who have pervert glasses.” Another, @off_grid_93, wrote, “Keep the dance floor private, present, and phone-free.” @mseeley stated, “Every venue should have this policy. Including Chili’s.” Just like every other announcement in the music world, it was not without critique. Despite being in the minority, @eyemsoreel wrote, “Most people using Meta glasses aren’t creeps… some of us actually just appreciate new tech, ya know.” As technology advances at an alarming rate and with the rise of AI, it can and will border on privacy infringement not only at the club but also in public spaces.
A venue’s respect for their patrons’ privacy, freedom, and ability to feel uninhibited should never be undervalued. Flagged by @andrewnazdin, and be aware that “@signalnyc is hosting parties with Ray-Ban & Meta to peddle the predator glasses to influencers.” Basement’s policy change is a step forward in protecting privacy across more public and private spaces. Live in the moment, dance the night away, and start leaving those eyesores, literally, metaphorically, and physically, at home.
