Hailene reflects on major operation that threatened her vocal abilities
Inside HALIENE’s Recovery: How Surgery Shaped “Solar Waves.”
HALIENE, the iconic vocalist known for her collaborations with producers like Illenium and Seven Lions, shocked fans with the news that last summer she underwent a major surgery that temporarily left her unable to sing.
On Monday, March 27th, she shared a video on social media, opening up about how the procedure impacted her as a singer. In the caption, she wrote, “I didn’t know how to share what I went through with you at the time, but I think it’s really important that I share this with you now.” The post was met with an overwhelming wave of supportive texts, DMs, and kind comments, prompting her to share more of her story in a follow-up post the next day.
The surgery was more serious than she had originally anticipated, requiring the removal of part of an internal organ. The procedure was long and intense, and her abdominal muscles were cut through in multiple places. When she woke up, she was horrified. As a singer, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles are everything. She explained, “It’s the foundation of tone and control of your instrument, and mine was gone.”
The timing heightened the experience, as she was in the middle of recording her next album, yet she couldn’t even hold a note post-surgery. Her body had to relearn how to sing entirely. At the time, she wasn’t sure if her voice would ever return to the same.
Despite the uncertainty, HALIENE continued to write and record. She adapted to what her body could handle, singing softly and breathily because it was all she could physically do. Unexpectedly, she fell in love with the sound. Serendipitously, that softer vocal style became the foundation of the final version of “Solar Waves,” her upcoming release set for Friday, May 1st.
The track now stands as a reflection of that period, a reminder that even in moments of weakness, something meaningful can still be created. As she shared, “And it turned out to be one of my favorite songs I have ever written.”
HALIENE has since made a full recovery and is continuing to move forward in both her music and her artistry.
