For newcomers, the experience feels like being dropped into a major mix of culture. SXSW began in 1987 as a modest music gathering, but today it’s a creative migration that pulls artists, filmmakers, coders, entrepreneurs, and curious observers from every corner of the planet. For ten days, a combination of all of these becomes a creativity experiment in Austin.

You’ll find the most frenzy on Sixth Street. Bass vibrating through walls, and crowds drifting from doorway to doorway like bees. One club may have a future chart-topping artist, while the venue next door hosts a midnight film premiere packed with industry insiders and excited first-timers.

When you need some time to relax, you can wander toward Lady Bird Lake. The trail offers a brief pause and a place where the skyline glimmers so your brain can catch its breath. The golden rule for SXSW rookies: loosen your grip on the itinerary. Stay opened minded to where the night can turn. In Austin during SXSW, curiosity should be your goal, and every street corner could hold a surprise waiting to happen.

How to Get There

Most travelers heading to South by Southwest fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, located about 15 minutes from downtown Austin, where the majority of the showcases and events will take place. Rideshares, taxis, and rental scooters are widely available, but expect heavy traffic during peak festival hours. Many attendees opt to walk between venues since much of SXSW’s music programming is clustered around the downtown entertainment districts.

What to Pack

SXSW days are long and often spontaneous, so pack for comfort and flexibility. You’ll want to. wear lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes. It’s also smart to carry a portable phone charger, and a small bag for essentials are key. March weather in Austin can shift quickly, so bringing a light jacket or rain layer is also a smart move.

I've been writing, covering events, and doing interviews with Exron for nearly four years, but have been an EDM-lover for over a decade. The music community and industry has a special place in my heart and I love exploring the depths. EDC Las Vegas is my favorite festival and this year will be my sixth time attending. Some other recent festivals I've been are Ultra, Elements, Lost Lands, Electric Forest, and Arc. I've been getting more into experimental bass, but techno and house will always have my heart. <3
