Jantsen Defends Playing Bassnectar Collab at Evolutions Festival

Is separating the art from the artist possible or when someone is canceled does everything they touch go with them?

With more scandals arising out of the electronic scene, there are many opinions on whether collaborating artists should be allowed to play the songs they created with a now “canceled” artist. Artists like Illenium were practically crucified online for playing out a Bassnectar song at one of his shows, but does the same apply when it is a collaboration?

Over the weekend at the Evolutions festival, Jantsen played as one of the headliners delivering an epic set. People uploaded a moment to Reddit where he played out, “It’s About to get Hectic” a collaboration he made with Bassnectar that caught some internet buzz.

Before playing it, he grabbed the mic to announce, “Nobody better come after me for playing this… I made the song too!” In the video, the crowd had a widely positive response and his set received widespread praise from fans on Twitter.

Though it begs the question, are artists entitled to play songs they’ve has a hand in creating even if the other contributors have a tarnished reputation? Do artists have an obligation to stop playing it and on the flip side do fans share the same responsibility?

The consensus on Reddit seems to have no negative feelings in response to the song. Redditor FourierXFM said, “I’ve been fairly critical of Lorin this whole time and even I think it’s the dumbest shit ever to get mad at artists for playing collabs. That’s probably more Jantsen’s song than it was Lorins anyway.”

This is not the first time Jantsen has played their collaborations at shows. Since the beginning of the Bassnectar accusation in 2019, Jantsen has continued to play his collaborations with Lorin at several shows.

The Bassnectar trial is ongoing and is currently in the Discovery process where depositions and other information are being collected to build a case. If the case will stand trial it will be in September of 2023.
