Seven Lions Returns Under Psytrance Alias Abraxis with “Black Rainbow” – [Listen]

DJ trio explores trippy mental spaces

For the first time in over a year, Seven Lions, known to friends and family as Jeff Montalvo, and DJ duo Dimibo, comprised of Filip Pankovcin and Loch Stimpson, released their most recent psytrance single via their collaborative project Abraxis. The three artists originally linked in 2017 for a remix of Excision’s dubstep banger “The Paradox.”

The trio would continue to collaborate over the next couple of years, performing B2B sets at clubs and festivals all over the world. Fast forward to 2019, Seven Lions and Dimibo shared that they were in the midst of developing an official-as-a-whistle new creative project focused on trance music – that project, labeled Abraxis, made its debut later that year in the fall via Insomniac’s Dreamstate festival.

This most recent release, titled “Black Rainbow,” also dropped right before Seven Lions’ highly anticipated performance at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, Washington this past Saturday. Seven Lions’ set,”Chronicles: Chapter III at the Gorge,” featured more psychetrance selections, as well as traditional brain-bashing bass.

Regarding his most recent festival performance, Seven Lions commented, “The Gorge is one of my favorite venues in the world, and I am beyond stoked and humbled to be bringing Chronicles 3 there.” He went on to elaborate with, “I’ll be joined by NGHTMRE, Jason Ross, Trivecta and Gem & Tauri Music. I’ll also be playing two sets – the closing set and the opening Observatory set. In the spirit of a Chronicles event, we will have brand-new art installations and interactive experiences for you to explore.”

Some of Abraxis previous singles include “Old Gods,” “Night Rider,” and “Half of It,” all of which feature a similar twilight-zone-esque tonality. This most recent release follows the musical aesthetic of its predecessors and ventures deep into the caverns of the mind. For those unfamiliar with psytrance dubstep, it’s not just music production, rather it’s an experience. The genre is hypnotic and powerful, and potentially the beginnings of what will inevitably become the next great exploration within EDM music.

Heralding from sunny South Florida, I am a proud Florida Woman. In my free time, I surf the swamp, wrangle gators, open fan mail, and tend to my pets. In the wild, I'm most often spotted at immersive art spaces, step tappin' in a shadowed corner of the club, hater blockerz on, totally incognito as your resident EDM spice girl. Although I generally tout my spicy side, if there's one thing I'd love to impress upon the world, it would be this: it's not a waste to give love to those who do not deserve it – it's a gift. The world would be a better place if we gave, in kindness and in mercy, to those who need it most with no expectation in return.
