EXRON EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: CRYSTAL SKIES

Crystal Skies have recently teamed up with singer and songwriter JT Roach for “Crazy While We’re Young” on Insomniac‘s new Lost In Dreams label. The track is a spunky fusion of pop and electronic sounds, held together by JT Roach’s smooth vocals.

Today, the official music video for “Crazy While We’re Young” dropped, highlighting the carefree spirit of this track. We got the chance to discuss the new song, quarantine, and potential next career steps with this duo of melodic masters.

Exron Music: How has quarantine affected your creative process?

Crystal Skies: One of the challenging parts of quarantine has been to find ways to stay inspired making music despite not being able to travel or play any shows. I get a lot of inspiration from seeing other artists perform, so luckily a lot of artists have been still releasing music and streaming despite the difficult situation. Personally I probably have more time to produce music because of the isolation, so that’s one positive thing I can take from all of this.

Exron Music: What does releasing on Insomniac’s new Lost In Dreams label mean for Crystal Skies?

Crystal Skies: We’re really excited to work with the label; we’re releasing some music that is in a different direction from stuff we’re made in the past and it fit well with what Insomniac was looking for. They’ve been very supportive of the vision and it’s been a pleasure working with them so far!

Exron Music: “Crazy While We’re Young” is a feel-good summertime anthem that you’ve admitted is a departure from your typical production style. Do you anticipate any future releases taking the same direction?

Crystal Skies: We’re always looking to evolve our sound and create something new. With that said, Crazy While We’re Young is probably more on the pop/folk side of things than we will typically do in the future. We want to make sure we still have that “Crystal Skies” sound that people recognize us for, but at the same time continue to work with new styles and genres.

Exron Music: How does it feel to take a risk and release something different from what fans have come to expect?

Crystal Skies: I don’t consider it to be that much of a risk. The worst thing that happens is some people might not like it, but we’ve gotten much more positive than negative feedback on the track so far. At the end of the day as a musician and artist, you have to eventually evolve your sound. If artists didn’t do that, we wouldn’t have a lot of the great music that exists today.

Exron Music: You guys recently had the chance to play “Crazy While We’re Young” live at a drive-in show, how would you describe the track’s energy on stage?

Crystal Skies: I’ll be honest, it’s hard to gauge energy at a drive-in show, although it certainly hit hard through the monitors on stage. However after the show, a lot of people were asking about it wanting to know what track it was, so I think it made a good impression.

Exron Music: You have worked with JT Roach in the past. What drew you all together in the studio together again?

Crystal Skies: JT had an acoustic demo of “Crazy While We’re Young” that he sent to us and we were immediately hooked and filled out the instrumentation with percussion, additional instruments, and all the drop sounds. We wanted to keep the live feel of the original performance while still making the drop hit hard enough to move the dance floor. Based on the response from our first show I think it turned out pretty well!

Exron Music: Can you share any details with us on upcoming projects or collabs?

Crystal Skies: We have several collaborations in the works that we’re really looking forward to, including with Jason Ross, Danny Olson, Mitis, and Fairlane. There are also some additional collabs that we can’t mention yet but are really excited about so stay tuned!

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
