Exron Exclusive: SubDocta

We were lucky enough to catch up with SubDocta after his set this past weekend at Forbidden Kingdom Music Festival in Boca Raton, Florida. We talked about everything from new music, career milestones, inspiration, and more with the fast-growing artist. We’ve been so drawn to his wobbly sound and high energy on stage that we just had to get to know him a little better.

Exron Music: How did it feel to have your first headline sellout show in Milwaukee last week?

SubDocta: It was great, I’ve been doing this for almost ten years and you know to finally get some recognition and a sellout in a place that I never thought I would, it was really really uplifting. Makes me feel like I’m on the right path, you know what a mean? A little confidence booster.

Exron Music: Do you have any upcoming collabs that fans should look forward to?

SubDocta: I have so many it’s hard to keep track of. Yeah a lot of the SubCarbon guys like you know Walter Wilde, Dirt Monkey of course, and I got Wolf-E-Wolf, and some offshoot stuff like Freddy Todd. Definitely got some weird stuff, some weird stuff for sure.

Exron Music: We love how the first release off your new EP, “Beasts Below” is deep and dark. Can we expect the rest of the album to be similar or are you changing it up?

SubDocta: No the rest of the EP is all obscure stuff that I’ve been sitting on. I was tired of waiting for labels to get back to me so there’s a full on metal song I wrote, there’s a couple deep dubstep, there’s like an off-kilter 155 tune but it’s all attributed to the deeper and darker side of stuff that I came up on.

Exron Music: Do you have an idea on when we’ll get another release from the EP?

SubDocta: This Tuesday, I’m gonna put the metal song out.

Exron Music: Where have you more recently drawn inspiration for your new music from?

SubDocta: I think doing the Dirt Monkey tour all of last fall was really good to see how people react to certain things. And besides this festival because my time slot was so short, I’ve been playing a lot of drum and bass in my sets, because the US has been slacking on their drum and bass interests so it’s good to see everybody warming up to the more obscure stuff and not the mainstream typical.

Exron Music: What’s one of your upcoming goals in terms of your music and career?

SubDocta: Honestly, I’m supporting myself off of music so at this point. This is my peak, this is what I wanted to do.

Exron Music: Which festivals or shows are you looking most forward to playing this year?

SubDocta: I think EverAfter in Toronto, the back to back with Dirt Monkey is gonna be a big one, just because the Montreal Toronto crew goes harder than I think anyone I’ve ever played for. And it’s a big lineup for me, it’s all the heavy hitters and I get to go on it now and it’s cool.

Exron Music: How has your journey as a part of SubCarbon been?

SubDocta: It’s been great. Those guys have been what I wanted to find in the music industry. It’s almost like the anti-what people expect, you know? We all hang out in the crowd, Jesse is always spinning poi, Brock is always out there, me and Patrick we’re always hanging out. It’s important for us to connect with fans because we wouldn’t be there if they didn’t pay for tickets. So why the fuck would I sit in the green room all day acting cooler than everybody else? It’s good to connect.

Exron Music: You’ve been producing music for quite a long time. What are some important lessons you’ve taken away from this whole experience?

SubDocta: When you want to quit is when you should push harder, because your music is not gonna be good for a very long time, and once you get over that creative hump no matter what your medium is, whether it’s music, painting, drawing, poi, fucking jump rope, it doesn’t matter. Whatever you’re doing, you have to push past that point because everybody quits when it gets too hard.

Exron Music: What are your thoughts on Forbidden Kingdom? As far as your performance and the festival all together from what you’ve seen.

SubDocta: I thought it was great. I mean I had a 1 PM slot, I did not expect people to come out. I’ve been to a festival on day two and that’s rough because sometimes we all send it a little too hard, but the support’s been overwhelming. I feel like I brought a little bit of a sound that might stand out throughout the day and I had a lot of people say that they were happy with it, so I can’t say much more than that.

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
