ULTRA RECORDS Celebrates 25th Birthday with Remixes of Sofi Tukker’s “Drinkee” by Carl Cox and John Summit
Powerhouse record label builds extraordinary following over the double decade
Approximately 25 years ago, Ultra Records was born – a New York underground label that would one day grow into an international phenomenon and cultural influence. To commemorate turning a quarter-of-a-century, Ultra Records dropped two back-to-back remixes of SOFI TUKKER’s debut single “Drinkee,” originally released back in 2016 and nominated for a Grammy in 2017.
The first remix features SOFI TUKKER, Vintage Culture, and John Summit – and the second is a simple reimagination by none other than Carl Cox, one of Europe’s most infamous and renowned DJ of all time. The remixes put a novel, funky twist on a throwback and fan favorite. According to Carl Cox, “I really enjoyed the original mix, so doing this remix was a pleasure to do. Using new analog Moogs, vocal samples and some lead guitar, was a great challenge to create something special. A true journey of electronic music. I hope you enjoy this remix.”
John Summit also spoke on his experience remixing “Drinkee” with, “When Vintage Culture reached out to me about remixing ‘Drinkee’ together it was a no-brainer. I was already working on a collab with SOFI TUKKER at the time (out later this year) and I had always loved the original.” Summit shared further, “Taking that iconic guitar riff and vocals and giving it our signature tech house treatment resulted in a monster of a track that I did not expect. It was almost effortless how quickly this one came together, and from the first time I played it out and saw the crowd reaction I knew it’d be a hit.”
For those less acquainted with Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, better known as SOFI TUKKER, their talent is undeniable. Their records have achieved Gold or Platinum status on every major continent, except the barren tundra of Antarctica. In addition to being excellent musicians, the pair are philanthropists who have teamed up with organizations such as Planned Parenthood, The Trevor Project, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Natural Resources Defense Council, and the March for Our Lives. Their dedication and passion extends well beyond the DJ booth, although their reach from the DJ booth is hypnotic, freaky, and impacting.
