Disclosure’s New Soul-Funk Inspired EP Has Arrived – Listen Here

After five days of night-after-night single track debuts, Disclosure’s full EP, in its entirety, is finally here. The first song to drop, kicking off the series of releases on Monday night, was “Ecstasy.” On Tuesday came “Tondo,” then “Expressing What Matters,” “Etran,” and finally “Get Close” on Friday.

Disclosure, known for their upbeat house/techno sound, stands out amongst their peers. Although there’s a strong movement toward the “grime” rave sound, popular in urban speak-easy-type-spots in the U.K., Disclosure combats that via their refreshing, uplifting tone. This recent album pulls inspiration from retro disco funk sounds, most notably via the title track “Ecstasy,” which samples from Aquarian Dream’s “Fantasy,” a 1978 soul funk album.

The rest of the album samples from various artists of similar sound, notably the Cameroonian musician Eko Roosevelt on “Tondo” and Niger’s Etran Finatawa on “Etran.” For “Expressing What Matters,” Disclosure samples from soul-guitarist Boz Scaggs’ grammy-winning 1976 hit “Lowdown.”

It’s clear that for this EP, Disclosure pays tribute to the major players of the 70’s, specifically with regards to soul and funk – and in a time of lasers, beep bops, and womp womps, this tribute to funk, soul, and minoritarian culture is greatly appreciated.
