WHAT SO NOT AND DMA’S UNVEIL BLOCKBUSTER SINGLE “THE CHANGE” – [LISTEN]
Alternative rock trio, DMA’S, and dance music hit-maker, What So Not, joined creative powers to release “The Change,” via the Sweat It Out imprint, and Counter Records. The four-and-a-half minute tune is a vocal-heavy, break-beat banger.
The masterful collaboration showcases the best features of both musical groups’ music. What So Not’s dynamic synthesizers shine through the percussion-driven mix, while DMA’S songwriting and harmonization give the tune its emotion.
The release ends What So Not’s yearlong hiatus, and marks DMA’S fourth release during 2021. “The Change” started off as a short musical idea when Emerson and Johnny Took (1/3 of the DMA’S) first met at the DMA’S studio in Sydney. They bonded over all-time favorite artists, tour life commonalities and shared Australian heritage.
As the musical idea evolved Tommy O’Dell and Matt Mason (the rest of the DMA’S) tracked their parts, further adding to the song’s depth. The track’s uniqueness can be attributed to how well every contribution stands out on its own. “Being from such different songwriting worlds, made this a great collaboration,” said Took.
In a time where many lost the drive to create art, these artists stepped up and delivered one of the catchiest tunes of the year. If recent What So Not shows and crowd reactions are any indication, “The Change” will be a widely-played tune throughout festivals worldwide.
Even though the tune originates from “The Land Down Under,” it is sure to bring everyone’s spirits up. We hope to see the two groups share the stage in the near future, and look forward to any future collaborations.
