Exron Exclusive: sober rob
This past week LA based producer sober rob took over The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, NY. The event was hosted by Levitate Events, a growing music events company in New York. The intimate venue provided a unique experience for sober rob to share some of his unreleased tracks from his upcoming EP. The unique stage design complimented both sober rob and the support acts of Jack Laboz and Andravida. Check out our full interview below.
Exron Music: We love your new track “Right Now”. What was it like working with blackbear?
sober rob: We never actually worked in person together. It was amazing being able to work with blackbear though. It was definitely a new experience being able to work with a vocalist of that caliber. It was a learning lesson production-wise to get my style to kind of match with an already established style from someone else.
Exron Music: “Right Now” was also the first release from your upcoming EP. When can we expect more from this collection?
sober rob: The second single is coming out March 8 and then the third single is coming out April 8 and then the album will come out on April 26.
Exron Music: Tell us about your performance at Burning Man this past year.
sober rob: Burning Man was interesting. I got the opportunity to perform at Burning Man through this festival called Emissions that I play every year in Northern California. They host Camp Questionmark at Burning Man. Burning Man isn’t just about music it’s also about experience and visual art and there’s a ton going on. It was really cool to experience everything. I had also never been camping before so that was an eye opening experience. Anything you can imagine is at Burning Man.
Exron Music: We see that you recently signed with United Talent Agency. What’s that been like for you?
sober rob: That’s been great. The album is finished now so we are starting to roll that out and work with them a little bit more.
Exron Music: Who are some of your influences?
sober rob: My earliest influences are like Skrillex and the early dubstep stuff. I kinda then moved into a Mr. Carmack and Flume direction. I also really love Sam Gellaitry and all of those guys. I feel like I’m more developed in my own lane and making my own sound.
Exron Music: Describe what it means to be an artist to you in a couple words.
sober rob: Honestly just simply making people feel something..
Exron Music: How excited are you to play some of your unreleased music tonight?
sober rob: I’m very excited because this is the first opportunity I’ve had to play with the album actually finished. The last set I played was at Audiotistic in Southern California and the album was done at all so I didn’t play anything off of it. So yeah I’m excited.
Exron Music: Are you hoping to incorporate more live music into your shows?
sober rob: So the goal is to play a set of pretty much all of my original music and to play the viola over most of the songs. As opposed tonight I’m only playing the viola over two songs which is dope but I definitely want to eventually play over most of the songs.
Exron Music: What’s a dream collaboration for you?
sober rob: I’d love to collaborate with James Blake at some point. That would be so cool. I’d love to work with Rick Rubin just to see what his vibe is. I’d love to work with Skrillex as well, I had a second hand Skrillex collaboration but I never got to meet him in the studio or anything.
Exron Music: Can you tell us about any upcoming sober rob performances?
sober rob: The next show I’m playing is in Austin at this festival called ILLectric River and it’s with Luca Lush, Vincent and a handful of other people. I’ll also be playing support to a tour coming up soon as well.
