Dada Life announces rare incurable liver disease and need for a transplant after terrifying hospitalization
Dada Life’s Stefan Engblom has shared he will be stepping away from touring as he awaits a life-saving liver transplant.
Stefan Engblom, best known as one-half of the Swedish electronic music duo Dada Life, has bravely shared that he is facing a rare and incurable liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). In a heartfelt message to fans, he revealed that his condition had taken a serious turn in recent weeks, and he now requires a liver transplant to survive.
PSC is a progressive disease that scars and inflames the bile ducts, leading to significant liver damage over time. For Stefan, the road has been especially tough, involving seven medical procedures in just 18 months. Two of these left him dealing with complications like pancreatitis and sepsis. He further explained that the wait for a donor could range from a single day to several years, as he is now listed for a transplant in Sweden.
Despite these challenges, Stefan’s outlook remains incredibly hopeful. In his announcement, he called this chapter of his life “the beginning of an upgraded version of myself.” It’s crucial he stays within an hour of Stockholm to await the transplant call, and he has put touring on hold for at least two years.
Dada Life has been a staple in the electronic dance music scene for years, known for their electrifying big-room beats and hits like “Kick Out the Epic Motherf**ker” and “Born to Rage.” Stefan’s health news has sparked an overwhelming wave of support from fans and peers in the music community. Artists such as Hardwell, Tiesto, Alesso, Axwell, Gordo, and many others have left comments rallying behind him in this pivotal time.
After the transplant, the first three months are critical as his immune system will be suppressed to prevent his body from rejecting the new liver. Lifelong immune-suppressing medications will become a part of his daily routine, reshaping his personal and professional life. But through it all, Stefan has remained optimistic.
“This feels like I’m watching a movie of myself,” Stefan shared on how surreal it all feels. Even with the uncertainty, he is focused on healing and hopes to reunite with fans in the future. This isn’t the end of Stefan and Dada Life—it’s a pause, a reset, and the start of a new chapter for the artist.
