Ibiza Underground Club abruptly closed by police amid ongoing challenges regarding the island’s nightlife scene
Ibiza Underground has been closed by police after 23 years following claims of license violations and an inoperable kitchen.
According to reports, Ibiza Underground closed on August 6 after it had received a notice from authorities a week beforehand. Police revealed that the club had only held a restaurant license despite hosting curated dance music events. They had also noted that the venue violated a law requiring permits when using sound equipment that surpasses 80 decibels.
Ibiza Underground closed indefinitely before issuing a statement that thanked the community for its support and promised that it has been working to find a way to return. The post had also revealed that Ibiza Underground is still determining when it will re-open or if it will be able to do so. It has allegedly been fined 60,000 euros for the violations.
Several artists including Alvaro Medina, Isbel, and Hugo Martinez were set to perform the day Ibiza Underground was shut down. Rhadoo’s weekly event was scheduled for the next night and subsequently canceled. Its Instagram biography now reads “Closed ‘til further notice,” cementing the closure.
The sealing of Ibiza Underground follows a string of venues being shut down in the area. SLUIZ. and House of WoW were also closed recently. Reports primarily cite sound and licensing law infractions and police have confirmed that they are paying more attention to such violations.
Other policies have been enforced in the last few years including bans on playing music outside after a certain time, alcohol limitations, and more. These changes have caused a stir and drawn much controversy in Ibiza’s nightclub scene. Some venues have reopened while others show no sign of continuing as authorities continue to press into license laws.
Despite this, the island’s nightlife is still thriving with electronic dance music. Potential future updates on the status of Ibiza Underground will be on its social media pages.
