Killer Mike Handcuffed and Arrested at the 2024 Grammys After Winning Three Awards

An overblown pre-Grammys altercation took center stage, as rapper Killer Mike was arrested following his multiple award wins.

As if the Grammys couldn’t get any more interesting, American rapper Killer Mike (a.k.a Michael Render) left the venue in handcuffs after winning a whopping three Grammy Awards.  In just one night, Render took the cake for Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album.  However, a rather dramatic display on the part of the LAPD decidedly cut the artist’s post-win bliss short.

Apparently, the 48-year-old artist found himself embroiled in a brief controversy during the pre-televised portion of the show. Specifically, reports allege that an over-zealous security guard prompted a physical altercation that subsequently led to his arrest. Ultimately, this unexpected disagreement with a female security guard caused Render’s citizen’s arrest and a resulting misdemeanor battery charge.

Killer Mike took exceeding care to swiftly address the night’s incident, pointing to confusion around entry points as the cause of the misunderstanding.  Furthermore, his team labeled the situation as “overblown” and expressed utter confidence that he would prevail over the charges.  The police released Render on his recognizance shortly thereafter, but not without a scheduled court date.

While Render’s Grammys were clearly a triumphant moment, the rather public arrest undoubtedly overshadowed what should’ve been a celebratory night.  Despite the controversy, Render expressed immense gratitude towards the Grammy voting committee for recognizing his work. During his acceptance speech, he proclaimed that it is the responsibility of all artists “to keep using [their] imagination to shape and form the world.”

Furthermore, Killer Mike shared several words of hope as “a Black man in America” who always dreamed of becoming “part of the music”.  Although the arrest was certainly not on his bingo card at the moment, he assured that the “9-year-old [was] excitedly dancing inside of [him]” after his wins. Not to mention, Killer Mike’s wins serve as a symbolic victory for underrepresented black artists across the board.

Overall, readers should not let the news cloud the incredibility of Killer Mike’s accomplishments at the 2024 Grammys.  Render joined music icons such as Skrillex, Fred Again.., Peso Pluma, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift in receiving the magnificent honor of a Grammy (let alone three).  Huge congrats to Killer Mike from Exron – for updates on the artist, head over to his Instagram page.

Having grown up just an earshot from Ultra Miami's venue Bayfront Park, it was next to impossible for me not to fall in love with electronic music. My love for music was evidently strong enough for me to write my college essay on festival culture and continue attending Ultra for 10+ years now. I have always had a knack for writing and the power of words, which I continued cultivating through a Philosophy degree in college. Now a law school graduate, I eventually hope to merge my passions by working in music law. I am an avid traveler and am certainly not afraid to hop on a plane for a music event. My next bucket list festivals to attend are Tomorrowland in Belgium and Sonus in Croatia. Though the list could go on forever, some of my favorite artists include Franky Wah, Mochakk, Kevin de Vries, and Eli Brown.
