Exron Music: Hi Jacob Colon, how’s it going?

Everything is great!

Exron Music: Can you tell us, what inspires your creativity?

My creativity comes from my drive to make something different from what’s been heard or is currently trending right now. I listen to different styles of music while I’m at the gym or driving, so I’m always grabbing inspiration from Hip Hop tracks, Latin music, Pop music and sometimes Afro beats. The foundations of my tracks are based around Tribal and Latin rhythmic patterns while the synths and bass may have a bit of a trappy or techy vibe. It’s something that I’m continuously building on, so let’s see where it goes.

Exron Music: Are you creative in any other realm apart from music, like art or photography?

I used to draw cartoons when I was younger, and I was pretty good. Other than that, my focus was playing the piano which is what led me to music production.

Exron Music: When do you feel most creative?

After a spark of inspiration, which as I mentioned previously can come from a variety of different sounds. It’s usually in the morning when my mind is fresh. That’s when I like to spend the most time creating music.

Exron Music: What do you do to get your creativity flowing?

I feel my flow of creativity comes easily but sometimes organizing and arranging my idea into a full song becomes a challenge. Sometimes I get stuck building a song, I can create an 8 or 16-bar loop which sounds great, but when moving onto another portion of the song where I may need to take out sounds or alter them, my ears are fatigued and start overcompensating parts of the track like a breakdown or build up which may take away the dynamics of the track. This is usually the time to walk away and come back later or the next day.

Exron Music: Do you ever struggle with lacking motivation to create?

Not really. I do things like read, and study other Producer’s tricks to keep myself consistently motivated.

Exron Music: Are there any particular spaces or environments that make you feel more creative?

I like to have a dim light setting when I create. I think a lot of people can agree it helps to create a nice ambience in the room.

Exron Music: How do you get inspired?

Thinking of what I could be if I just stick with creating.

Exron Music: Do you have any tips and tricks for creating when lacking inspiration?

Take a couple of days off and get your mind to use parts of the brain that are not in use during your creative moments. This helps reset the portion of the brain that controls creative thinking and can help give you a fresher restart on your next track. A couple of ideas may be reading a book, meditation, or simply a distraction from music for a little while.

Exron Music: What advice would you give to someone struggling to express their originality through their creativity?

The struggle in the beginning is always the hardest but the more you continue to flex your creative muscles, the less daunting the task will become. Consistency through hardship is what builds character and helps you retain the success you’re destined for.

With such an experienced approach toward music production, Jacob Colon is surely on a path to keep creating unmissable music, carving out a unique way within Electronic Music that promises to see him reaching even more milestones soon. So, as we close out this interview, we thank Jacob Colon for taking the time to speak with us and look forward to hearing more from him soon.

I've been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo's Mad Decent but these days you'll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I'll get down to anything with a beat!

What's your reaction?
