Exron Exclusive Interview: Melleefresh

In this exclusive interview, Melleefresh reflects on her musical journey in 2023, highlighting standout tracks and releases. She talks about her favorite tracks of her own, as well as artists that caught her attention in the past months, and the unique collaborations that happened in 2023. Throughout the interview, Melleefresh’s playful approach to music shines, emphasizing the importance of having fun in the creative process.

Exron Music: Can you share with us your personal top tracks or releases from this year, and what makes each of them special to you?

‘Beg’, a track I co-wrote with Jazz multi-instrumentalist Rob Christian. It’s an Electro House track though. It was exciting to work with someone who had never produced EDM before. My compilation ‘150bpm Workout’ did really well. It was a bunch of my older tracks sped up to 150bpm for working out to with my personal trainer. I also put all 12 tracks into a medley called ‘150bpm Minimix’ and made an awesome music video out of it.

I also did a series of Dance bangers from Play Deep my studio in London, England with UK producer Hectic, The Play Deep Sessions, where everyone wanted more of House music with some bangin’ Techno. ‘Push’ and ‘Squeeze Me,’ to follow up on ‘Snap It’ from 2022, more to come in 2024!

And then there’s my classic ‘Hey Baby’, my track from 2006 with Deadmau5, which I totally love, and is a historical reminder that older tracks are like a fine wine, and just get better with age.  It never ceases to amaze me how many brand-new fans it acquires every year to keep it in my top 10, thank you!

Exron Music: Reflecting on the past year, which track, either by your own production or by another artist, do you feel has had the biggest impact on your career, and why?

I loved working on ‘A.D.I.D.A.S.’ aka  (All Day I Dream About Sex) with Kardano. I also shot a music video for it. Not yet released and the remixes just recently came out this year, are all pretty diverse and magical.

Exron Music: Were there any unexpected or surprising moments related to the tracks on your list, whether they are your own or by other artists? Any unexpected fan reactions or collaborations that stood out?

A few years ago, I released the track ‘Let’s Do It Together’ on my Invincible album.  Then I had some remixes made of it. Then I brought in Princess Superstar to add some vocals to the original mix. We released that as the SuperFresh Mix. That also had some remixes. And now, I’ve got a new remix coming out on 26 December for it that my pals Rave Alarm did. There must be 20+ remixes of this track by now. It’s the track that keeps on giving.

Exron Music: Can you share a track by another artist that you discovered this year and felt a deep connection to? What drew you to that particular piece of music?

I love Who Killed Alice, a couple of UK producers Dan and Jason, with a distinctive party House style. We met up at my studio in London and did some collabs coming out next year. Can you say ‘POF on the PJ’!

Exron Music: Are there any particular musical influences or experiences from the year that you believe are reflected in your selection of top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists?

For all my new tracks, I’m going for a more minimalist vibe on the vocals. Looking for more tracks with banging beats that complement minimal spoken word. Similar to Fisher’s ‘Take It Off’ or Honey Luv’s ‘Paradise’. 

Exron Music: Can you share any memorable anecdotes or stories related to the creation or performance of one of your personal releases or a track by another artist on your top list?

I did a new Christmas track with Fergal Freeman who popped over to the UK from Spain, so great to collab with producers when you’re in Europe, all the countries are so close to each other… the track is called ‘Santa Claus Is Cumming’. That was a fun session. A very Die Antwoord kinda vibe.

Exron Music: Looking back on the year, do you notice any common themes or motifs that run through your top tracks, or were they intentionally diverse in style and sound?

My common theme is sex. The cute kind, not the threatening kind.

Exron Music: How do you feel your music has evolved or changed over the past year, and do your top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists, represent this evolution in any way?

My music hasn’t changed much in theme. It’s always been a lotta sexual innuendo.

Exron Music: What message or emotions do you hope your audience takes away from your selection of top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists, as they wrap up this year and move into the next?

Playfulness. That’s why my label is called Play Records. Cause if the artist isn’t having fun, no one else is either.
