Heav3n Returns To Downtown LA With Genre-Bending Experience – [Review]
LULO’S HEAV3N EVENT RETURNS AND BRINGS RISING STARS, SPECIAL GUESTS, AND GENRE-BENDING MUSIC
Heav3n returned to 1720 Warehouse in Los Angeles on Friday, March 18th. The event, organized by artist and entrepreneur Lulo, brought artists and DJs across the electronic-techno-hyperpop genres together for a talent-filled night.
The event stayed true to its roots as an enclave for Queer and Trans genre-benders with music that spoke to and for the communities.
Including Drag Queen girl-group Hell’s Angels, who performed to familiar music, and numerous other artists who identify within the community.
The night started with a DJ set from Adamgoesham, who got the first round of party-goers dancing and engaged.
After him was musician Ryl0, who was the first live performer of the night. Her music puts an original spin to pop music using unique rock and techno influences. Ryl0 captivated the audience with hypnotic vocal effects, bouncing beats, and alluring stage presence, making for a highly memorable performance.
Following Ryl0 was artist and producer LVL1, who gave a DJ set composed of original and familiar music. The crowd was feeling their set heavily, being seen dancing a jumping for them more than most.
The regular Heav3n performer Belis was next. Her short but sweet live set included her hit “Hysterical Glamour,” which many audience members knew by heart. However, unlike past performances at the event by the act – this time around included “dance support” and motivational outbursts by her boyfriend.
Experimental electronic artist Petal Supply followed Belis. Her heavy but artistic use of autotune combined with ear-grabbing production gave for a highly unique set. In addition, the lighting production on her set was one of the best of the night. Perfectly encapsulating her energy and mood.
Following Petal Supply was fellow experimental electronic artist Uffie. Having performed at Heav3n before, this time around, Uffie went with a DJ set. Playing crowd favorites like “Vroom Vroom” by Charli XCX.
Hell’s Angels came out next, getting the crowd cheering with performances to OnlyFire’s “Asmr” and Kim Petras’ “Throat Goat.” Right after they left, the artist and producer COBRAH made a guest appearance and talked to the fans for a second before leaving the stage.
The back-to-back acts of DAGR and Jimmy Edgar came next and delivered the two most exciting performances of the night.
Experimental electronic-pop duo DAGR came on the stage with a fantastic presence and even better music. Making even those unfamiliar with the duo jump and dance.
The highlights of their set were bringing out special guests Dizzy Fae and Esty for their single “Yomp.” As well as bringing out LVL1 and Rebecca Black for an unreleased single that the whole crowd couldn’t get enough of. Yes, that Rebecca Black.
The best act of the night, however, was Jimmy Edgar. He delivered this act from the back of the venue while experimental dancer Maija Knapp performed to original music by the artist.
The live performance began with a loading screen taking up the entirety of the stage. After what seemed like an eternity of loading, along with captivating experimental dance, the screen loaded, and out came a pink box gradually getting bigger.
This box got bigger until it took over the screen. Knapp’s dancing got more and more intense as it grew. Upon engulfing the screen in pinkness, abstract animations of animals, objects, and people started flying across the screen.
Knapp’s dance got more experimental as this occurred, going under and on top of the turntable and then touching audiences members’ faces with her own.
The combination of experimental dance, graphics, music, lighting, and pure stage ownership made Jimmy Edgars set the most artistic and interesting of the night. The entire audience was captivated, unable to look away. Side conversations died, and everyone’s eyes were locked on the sheer genius of the performance.
Closing out the night where the artists Virgen Maria, Kreayshawn, and Blvckjesus.
Virgen Maria took to the stage in a Playboy bunny mask, bikini, and fake machine gun. Behind her was anime graphics that looked like it could’ve been inside a kaleidoscope.
The last two sets by Kreyshawn and Blvckjesus closed out the night with a bang and brought the artistic and electronic night to a close.
The monthly event is sure to return to the 1720 warehouse next month. However, in typical Heav3n fashion, fans won’t unlock the lineup til a week or two beforehand. Just how most of their party-goers seem to like.
