Sister duo Krewella returns with fourth studio album ‘Peak’
Krewella reflects on struggles, growth, and a changing relationship with the electronic music landscape on their fourth studio album.
For Krewella, the sister duo Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf, their career has been defined by an ever-changing entertainment industry, personal hardships, and navigating societal bias due to their multicultural background. Best known for their 2013 platinum-selling single, “Alive,” the sisters have faced struggles gaining consistent success in the electronic dance music and pop genres. Their fourth studio album, “Peak,” acts as an ode to all that Krewella has collectively overcome and the wisdom they’ve gained along the way.
Acting as a culmination of Krewella’s career, this newly released album acts as a paradox for all the times everyone from the outside world felt the duo had reached their “peak,” when, in reality, those periods were some of the toughest personally for the sisters. With pop-influenced hits like “Press Play” and “The Blueprint” to more bass-driven tracks like “Hear Me Now” and “Crying on the Dancefloor,” the sisters illustrate their journey away from the spotlight and how it became one of the most influential periods in their lives. Through contrasting deep, melodic vocals and the culmination of a drop—acting almost as a light at the end of the tunnel—the album explores heavy themes of grief and spirituality and juxtaposes them with overcoming challenges posed by the human experience.
Throughout the album, the duo reflects on the current creative landscape in the modern age and the ever-evolving technology that threatens human expression. Instead of trying to resolve these issues, the album navigates a path to embracing the complexities. The album’s title track, “Peak,” is the perfect summation of all these themes: “The world is moving faster, and I just can’t keep up. Call me when it’s over, when I’m a particle of dust.”
Ultimately, “Peak” is less about reaching a final destination and more about recognizing the experiences that shape the journey. For Krewella, the moments that once appeared to be career highs often came with personal challenges that were invisible from the outside. By confronting those struggles while embracing change, technology, and the uncertainty of the future, the Yousaf sisters turn “Peak” into a reflection of where they’ve been and a statement about where they are going next.
