Swedish House Mafia host free pop-up event in Gothenburg following weather cancellation

After severe weather canceled their scheduled Ullevi performance, Swedish House Mafia gave Gothenburg fans an unexpected second chance to see the trio live.

Swedish House Mafia’s highly anticipated return to Gothenburg, Sweden took an unexpected turn after severe weather forced the trio to cancel its Friday night performance at the open air stadium, Ullevi.

Thousands of fans had gathered at the stadium on Aug. 28 for the group’s first scheduled performance of the weekend when a storm moved into the area. With Sweden’s authorities issuing a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts, the venue was evacuated and the concert was ultimately canceled for safety reasons.

While the cancellation was met with disappointment from fans who had traveled to Gothenburg for the performance, Live Nation confirmed that ticket holders would receive refunds. The frustration quickly intensified when Swedish House Mafia announced a free pop-up nearby in Götaplatsen the following afternoon.

The surprise performance drew a massive crowd, with roughly 40,000 people gathering to see the trio perform for free. While some fans celebrated the unexpected opportunity, others questioned why the group could perform the following day after the Ullevi cancellation.

The announcement also reignited criticism from fans who claim Swedish House Mafia has developed a reputation for canceling performances. Online discussions surrounding the canceled show quickly filled with frustration from attendees who had spent money on travel, hotels, and tickets to see the group at Ullevi. Some fans argued that the free pop-up did not make up for the expenses and inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

Despite the backlash, organizers clarified that the Götaplatsen performance was not intended as a replacement for the canceled concert. The event had been discussed with Swedish House Mafia before the Ullevi cancellation, although the final decision to perform was made late Friday night.

Swedish House Mafia ultimately returned to Ullevi Saturday night, performing for 65,972 fans in what the Sweden Herald called the group’s biggest concert in Sweden.

Based in Denver now, or better known as the “Bass Capital,” but I grew up in a small town in Colorado called Montrose. I came to the big city for college and just never left. One day I reconnected with a friend from my hometown and she told me she was a drum and bass DJ and took me to a couple of her sets. It all snowballed from there. I fell in love with the DnB community and, later, the EDM community as a whole. I love listening to Subfocus, Rezz, Subtronics, and Griz. Hoping 2027 is the year for my first festival!
