Everything we know about Burning Man 2026
The dates, the theme, the temple, the ticket situation and what’s changed on the playa this year.
Black Rock City is open. Burning Man 2026 runs August 30 through September 7 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, and after a 2025 edition defined by flooding, dust storms and a homicide investigation, this year’s gathering arrives with a lot riding on it. Here’s everything we know.
The theme: Axis Mundi
Announced in October 2025 by Burning Man‘s Stuart Mangrum, Axis Mundi takes its name from the world tree that sits at the center of the cosmos in culture after culture; the Maya’s Ceiba, the Norse Yggdrasil, the Bodhi tree of Buddhism. The Man is the axis. The framing is deliberately pointed at a fractured moment: the theme asks participants to recognize that “we are part of something larger,” across borders, ideologies and screens.
The Temple of the Moon
Designed by James Gwertzman, this year’s temple draws on the Queen of the Night cactus flower and the lunar cycle. It’s built as a space for reflection and remembrance rather than spectacle, and it burns on the Sunday after the Man.
The art
Burning Man Project funded 75 Honoraria projects for 2026 with roughly $1.3 million in grants, drawing artists from 15 countries and 17 U.S. states. Fourteen of the installations incorporate fire.
What’s changed
Handheld lasers are banned this year on safety grounds, though registered non-handheld laser installations can still operate under specific conditions. Mayan Warrior is sitting out with its art car for the first time in over a decade, pivoting instead to a new camp, Discosmos, at 2 & J. Several other longtime camps also opted out, citing rising costs and staffing strain; a sustainability question the org hasn’t fully answered.
Tickets
Tickets ran across six tiers from $550 to $3,000, with vehicle passes at $165. The OMG sale opened July 29 with availability in every tier, including the scarce low-end options; the third year running that demand hasn’t outstripped supply, following a $20 million fundraising push launched in 2024.
If it’s your first burn
Nothing is sold on the playa. Bring 1.5 gallons of water per person per day, goggles and a particle mask, and layers: days push past 100°F and nights drop into the 40s. Light yourself and your bike. Leave no trace.
