A techno lover’s guide to Frankfurt nightlife

The clubs, warehouses and basements worth building a weekend around in Germany’s most underrated dance music city.

Frankfurt is a banking town with vivacious nightlife, particularly for techno. The city that gave the world Sven Väth, Cocoon and the legend of Omen still runs one of the most serious electronic scenes in Germany, and it does it without Berlin’s queues or its self-mythology. The best rooms are split between the Gutleutviertel, the Bahnhofsviertel and a strip of Offenbach warehouses ten minutes down the river. From the perspective of veteran ravers, here’s where to go.

Tanzhaus West

The pillar of the modern scene, housed in a raw former ink factory on Gutleutstraße. Multiple indoor floors run heavy industrial and hard techno under laser rigs, while a sprawling outdoor courtyard hosts day-raves all summer. Arrive late and plan to stay.

Robert Johnson

At Nordring 131 in Offenbach, a short ride east of the center, sits the room that made Frankfurt a house destination. It’s small, purist and internationally revered, with a booking policy that favors long sets over big names. Capacity is tiny, so the door can be selective.

MTW

Same Offenbach address, entirely different scale: a concrete warehouse hall on the Main running hard techno, trance and driving progressive house, with a big outdoor terrace facing the Frankfurt skyline. Pair it with Robert Johnson and never move your car.

Tokonoma

Reopened in a new Gutleutstraße home after years at Kaiserstraße 39, Tokonoma is booked in partnership with local vinyl institution RAWAX. Expect records-first sets that wander from ambient techno to stripped-back minimal house.

Silbergold

A basement on Heiligkreuzgasse in the Innenstadt, tucked beneath a parking garage. Friendly door, a crisp custom Funktion-One system, and nights that swing between indie-dance, classic house and bouncy electronica.

Freud

A dark Bahnhofsviertel basement with a strict no-photo policy, stickers over your camera at the door, and a dedicated awareness team. Two floors split high-BPM industrial hard techno from hypnotic deep techno.

Housebar 55

A small storefront on Elbestraße deep in the red-light district, where local selectors play intimate deep and micro house until it gets light.

Heralding from sunny South Florida, I am a proud Florida Woman. In my free time, I surf the swamp, wrangle gators, open fan mail, and tend to my pets. In the wild, I'm most often spotted at immersive art spaces, step tappin' in a shadowed corner of the club, hater blockerz on, totally incognito as your resident EDM spice girl. Although I generally tout my spicy side, if there's one thing I'd love to impress upon the world, it would be this: it's not a waste to give love to those who do not deserve it – it's a gift. The world would be a better place if we gave, in kindness and in mercy, to those who need it most with no expectation in return.
