French DJ Kavinsky dies at age 50

French electronic artist Kavinsky, born Vincent Belorgey, has died at the age of 50. Best known for his hit single, Nightcall, the French producer played a major role in bringing synthwave to mainstream audiences. He pioneered a sound that would go on to influence electronic and pop artists around the world.

Kavinsky first gained recognition in the mid 2000s, but his career reached new heights with the release of Nightcall in 2010. The song became an international hit after appearing in the opening scene of the 2011 film Drive, introducing millions of listeners to his music.

After nearly ten years without a studio album, Kavinsky returned in 2022 with Reborn, marking a new chapter in his career. In 2024, he performed Nightcall during the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics bringing one of his most iconic songs to a worldwide audience once again.

Beyond his own releases, Kavinsky’s influence can be heard across electronic and pop music. The Weeknd has credited him as an inspiration, with fans often pointing to Kavinsky’s dark, cinematic production as an influence on After Hours. His work also helped spark renewed interest in retro-inspired electronic music, inspiring producers across genres to embrace the synth-driven sound.

According to French media, Kavinsky was found dead at his home in Paris. Authorities reportedly found no evidence of foul play, while early reports suggest investigators suspect he suffered a stroke.
