Rusko announces indefinite career hiatus to focus on mental health
After 20 years of nonstop production and touring, Rusko steps away indefinitely, saying his next big set is to recover from his setbacks.
Dubstep icon Rusko has announced an indefinite hiatus from music and touring after revealing that he has stepped away from the spotlight to focus on his mental health. The Leeds-born dubstep pioneer has shared the news with fans on Instagram, explaining that years of nonstop travel, performances, and artistic pressure have eventually taken a serious toll. After more than two decades on the road, the producer has decided that his next headline act needs to be taking care of himself.
The artist, whose real name is Chris Mercer, has admitted that he has reached a point where continuing as normal has no longer been possible. He has described experiencing a serious mental breakdown and has said that he has been ignoring warning signs from both his mind and body for too long. While he has apologized to fans for canceling upcoming appearances, he has made clear that his recovery has needed to come before the next festival slot.
Rusko has also left the door open to a possible return, although he has not offered any timeline or guarantees. Rather than calling this a definitive goodbye, he has suggested that fans might eventually hear a much more cheerful “see ya later, alligator.” For now, however, the decks have taken a back seat while the DJ has focused on healing—an entirely reasonable reason to leave the group chat, the tour bus, and probably several airports behind.
The announcement has marked another significant health-related pause in Rusko’s career. In 2017, he stepped away from music after being diagnosed with stomach cancer, later confirming that his treatment had been successful and that he had become cancer-free. His latest decision has once again prompted an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists, who have praised him for prioritizing his wellbeing.

Rusko has remained one of the most influential figures in the global dubstep movement. Through tracks including “Cockney Thug,” his work with Caspa, and albums such as O.M.G.!, he has helped bring UK bass music to a worldwide audience. His impact has extended far beyond the dancefloor, making his decision to step away especially meaningful for a scene that has continued to confront the intense mental and physical demands of touring.
His hiatus has also arrived as conversations around mental health in the music industry have grown louder. The pressures of constant travel, irregular schedules, isolation, financial uncertainty, and relentless performance expectations have increasingly been recognized as serious challenges for artists. For now, Rusko has chosen recovery over the road, and fans have made one thing clear: the music can wait.
