Consciencia exhibit hit by art theft at Tomorrowland weekend 1
An immersive art installation meant to be shared with festival goers was disrupted after two paintings disappeared during Weekend 1.
Tomorrowland Weekend 1 delivered another memorable edition of the festival, but one unexpected incident took attention away from the music. Two paintings from the festival’s Consciencia art exhibit disappeared during the final day of the opening weekend, leaving organizers searching for the missing works. The pieces were part of a six painting collection created specifically for this year’s theme and displayed inside the Tomorrowland Restaurant.
The collection was designed around six emotions, with paintings representing love, desire, wonder, anger, joy, and sadness. While four of the works remained on display, the paintings representing love and desire were reported missing after Weekend . Organizers believe the artwork was taken despite security measures surrounding the exhibit, making the incident an unfortunate moment for an installation.
After Tomorrowland asked for the missing artwork to be returned, there was at least one positive update. The painting titled Love eventually made its way back to festival organizers. It is disappointing to see artwork created for a shared experience removed from the people it was intended for.
Tomorrowland has long invested in immersive stages, installations, and creative spaces that go beyond the music itself. The Consciencia exhibit was another example of that effort. Taking pieces from that display ultimately takes away from everyone else visiting the festival.
With Love now back in its place, attention shifts to the remaining missing painting, desire. It will be interesting to see whether it resurfaces at all. After one piece found its way back, there is reason to hope the second could eventually follow.
The incident comes during a busy week for Tomorrowland, as excitement continues to build beyond Belgium. Alongside Weekend 2 preparations, the festival also revealed plans to expand to Las Vegas next year. Even with that announcement generating plenty of excitement, organizers are likely hoping the focus returns to the music, the art, and the community.
