MAKJ retires alias and launches new chapter as KENZ

After 15 years building one of edm’s most recognizable names, Mackenzie Johnson is closing the door on MAKJ and stepping into a new era.

Mackenzie Johnson, the electronic music DJ and producer known globally as MAKJ, announced he is retiring his longtime stage name and rebranding as KENZ, closing the door on a 15-year career under one of dance music’s most recognized monikers. Johnson shared the news on Instagram, writing that after 15 years of making music and touring the world as MAKJ, it was time for a new chapter, welcoming fans to “Kenz.” He’s already made popular tunes under the new name such as “Rake it up.”

The post quickly drew an outpouring of support, with one follower writing, “Proud of you brother!! Gonna be the best chapter,” while another said they had been wondering who Kenz was, adding, “Love love love.” A third fan summed up the sentiment of many, writing, “I always loved MAKJ but I’m stoked to see what’s next.”

Johnson discovered his passion for DJing at 15 while living overseas in China as a professional race car driver, picking up his first set of Technics 1200 turntables and never looking back. At 17, he returned to the United States and received one-on-one scratching lessons from the late DJ AM, a mentorship that helped shape his trajectory in the industry. Last.fmLast.fm

Breaking into the scene with solo releases and collaborations alongside artists such as Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Timmy Trumpet and Deorro, MAKJ became a festival staple, performing at Electric Zoo, EDC, Coachella and the main stage at Tomorrowland. In March 2014, Billboard named him one of the Top 10 Artists to Watch at Ultra Music Festival, and later that year he landed at No. 63 on DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs list. Beyond performing, Johnson also served as host of Revolution Radio on Clear Channel’s Evolution channel.

I've been writing, covering events, and doing interviews with Exron for nearly four years, but have been an EDM-lover for over a decade. The music community and industry has a special place in my heart and I love exploring the depths. EDC Las Vegas is my favorite festival and this year will be my sixth time attending. Some other recent festivals I've been are Ultra, Elements, Lost Lands, Electric Forest, and Arc. I've been getting more into experimental bass, but techno and house will always have my heart. <3
