Why wandering through Sherwood Forest is the soul of the Electric Forest experience

From sound baths to secret pathways, here’s why exploring Sherwood Forest is the heart of the Electric Forest experience

If you’ve ever wondered what attending Electric Forest feels like, the answer is surprisingly simple: you wander. The festival invites curiosity in a way few others can. Whether you’re returning to Sherwood Forest or experiencing it for the first time, something is waiting to be discovered just beyond the path you planned to take.

Electric Forest is known for its stacked lineups, immersive production, and larger-than-life art installations woven through every corner of the venue. For many attendees, the music is what first pulls them in. But longtime Forest lovers know the real experience begins once you stop rushing between sets and allow yourself to explore.

This festival is the definition of side questing. Wander long enough, and you may stumble upon a surprise set hidden deep within the trees, glowing mushrooms lighting the pathways, or performers speaking in riddles to passing strangers. At night, lasers cut through the forest canopy while lanterns and mirrored installations transform the trails into something dreamlike.

Sherwood Forest is a world within the festival. Decorated walkways stretch beneath towering trees while stages appear unexpectedly between pockets of light and color. During Michigan’s warm late June days, shaded hammocks become small sanctuaries for exhausted dancers. Even without a hammock of your own, Electric Forest operates on a sharing-is-caring vibe.

Part of the magic comes from saying yes to the unexpected. If you see a group gathered in line for something unfamiliar, ask questions and join the adventure. One moment you could be headed toward a stage, and the next you’re sitting in a sound bath encompassed by waves of sound bouncing off gongs. Then there’s the iconic Dream Emporium, a surreal maze of bizarre interactive rooms that somehow make perfect sense once you’re inside. Make sure you find your way to the roller rink, where you may find a DJ throwing down.

At Electric Forest, the music may be what draws people in, but wandering is what makes the festival unforgettable. Somewhere between the cuddle puddles, hidden pathways, and late-night discoveries, the Forest transforms you. The real magic has never belonged to a schedule. It lives in everything you find while getting wonderfully lost.

My name is Alejandra Benitez and I was born and raised in the DMV. Having close proximity to Washington D.C. means I am accustomed to a fast paced environment as things are constantly changing. For me, the EDM scene has provided so much comfort and space to really find myself even amongst chaos. My first ever show was Zeds Dead and it truly changed my outlook on community and further affirmed my love for music. I am a basshead at heart but enjoy exploring new genres and artists. Being a writer for Exron has given me an amazing opportunity to learn more about the electronic music industry and I love being able to express myself creatively. Some of my favorite artists include Levity, Rezz, Tape B, Disco Lines, and Sub Focus.
