Music On Festival canceled after Amsterdam Municipality revokes permit

Amsterdam’s Music On Fest vanishes in hours over one permit pull, one tent dispute, and 20,000 angry ravers.

Amsterdam’s weekend rave plans have taken a drastic painful turn. Music On Festival has now been cancelled at the 11th hour following a permit revocation by the city’s municipal department. What had been expected to be a two-day technofest at Meerpark instead turned worse as 20,000 ticket holders heard the news of the unexpected announcement. Now they’ve spent the last recent hours on group chats, Reddit, and word of mouth with antsy frustration on alternatives to what they came for.

Unsurprisingly, organizers revealed they learned of the decision the very same morning. The news then told fans not to travel to the festival grounds, confirming that the festival won’t be moving forward. The timing made the news especially brutal, with the cancellation arriving only hours before the first artists were set to take the stage. It has been the kind of plot twist nobody wanted, especially after people had already packed from all over Europe for this event alone.

According to local reporting, the issue centered on a tent structure that differed from the one originally approved under the festival’s permit. While the event had previously secured authorization, the revised setup reportedly required additional approval from local authorities. Safety concerns surrounding that structure ultimately led the Municipality of Amsterdam to revoke the permit overall, leaving organizers with little room to salvage the weekend.

The festival team then reportedly pursued an emergency legal challenge in an attempt to keep the event alive. Organizers argued that weather conditions were manageable and that canceling so late would be deeply damaging for both staff and attendees. The court, however, upheld the decision. By Friday afternoon, the gates stayed closed, the speakers were silent, and the entire parksite had become Amsterdam’s quietest venue.

One part of the weekend has survived, though. Music On By Night remains scheduled as planned, with both nights already sold out. For many fans, that has offered at least a small silver lining in the unexpected news. In the end, Amsterdam has still delivered a shocking plot twist drama, just not the kind we usually see from a running festival.

Questions now shift toward refunds. As of now, no reimbursement process has been fully outlined, though further updates will follow. Roughly 20,000 ticket holders are now awaiting an answer while teams assess financial obligations ranging from artist deposits to production, staffing, and legal costs.
