Bass DJ Spag Heddy announces project rebrand

Formerly known as Spag Heddy, the Dutch bass icon drops his most aggressive project yet under the new moniker SPAG with a genre twist.

Fifteen years deep, the Dutch bass icon SPAG HEDDY burns down his alias and rebuilds from the ground up. Mischa Reining (aka SPAG and Spag Heddy) has officially closed the book on his old moniker, Spag Heddy. He’s now simply SPAG, dropping the secondary part of his previous stage name. To introduce the new ego his debut EP “This Is Spag”, landing May 1st on Kannibalen Records, is his reentry.

The project hits across four tracks with no warm-up. The new imprint opens with trap and dubstep, then moves into liquid vibes and nostalgia. Experimenting with sound, SPAG experiments with choppy, groove-driven bounce that rounds out the EP without losing its edge. Taken together, it’s a confident declaration of where this project lives and the evolution of the artist behind the scenes. SPAG is quoted as saying, “I want to capture that early energy again, but reimagined for a new generation, the dubstep for kids who didn’t grow up in the golden brostep days. Same artist, just sharper, louder, and more dialed in.”

The credentials aren’t in question. Skrillex, Excision, Subtronics, NGHTMRE, and Zeds Dead have all championed his records. He’s stood on the stages of Lost Lands, EDC Las Vegas, and Life Is Beautiful. Sync placements with Fortnite, KFC, and Jagermeister sit alongside playlist homes on Spotify’s Mint, Bass Arcade, and Apple Music’s Festival Bangers. His foundation was never the problem but it was the jumping-off point for his rebrand as the next extension of his artistry.

Kannibalen Records, the Montreal imprint behind Kai Wachi, Apashe, and Sullivan King, is where the next chapter begins. Canadian dates are live this June with stops in Calgary and Edmonton, and a U.S. tour is in the works. If the EP is any indication of what he’s bringing to the stage, rooms are going to feel it. “This Is Spag” is out May 1st on Kannibalen Records.
