John Summit Receives Death Threats From Charli XCX Fans After Clapping Back at “Dance Floor Is Dead,” a Charli XCX song Lyric.

A leaked lyric from Charli XCX’s upcoming new album, “XCX8,” set off a chaotic chain of social media replies and angry Twitter fingers from both John Summit and Charli XCX stans alike. Somehow, resulting in Summit receiving death threats. Normal day on the internet.

The Charli XCX statement in question is, “I think the dance floor is dead, now we’re making rock music.” For most people, that is an artist signaling a pivot. For John Summit, a tech-house DJ who has built his entire career inside the club world, he clapped back. Summit wrote, “Maybe ur pop music dance floor is dead but ours isn’t babe.” Short, direct, and petty, yet a reasonable reaction from an artist whose job is to fill rooms with people who very much want to dance.

Charli XCX has one of the most devoted fan bases in pop right now, following her iconic Brat Summer in 2024. And so does Summit. The XCX stans were not interested in letting it slide. Things escalated quickly beyond the usual social media pile-on. Summit posted on Twitter, confirming that fans had somehow tracked down his personal phone number and were sending him threats, writing: “yeah they’re insane, they found my number somehow and sending me threats, not worth fighting against if I were u.”

A DJ made a mildly pointed comment about a pop lyric and ended up with strangers threatening his life over it. The comment was not cruel, nor was it a direct target at Charli XCX personally, though it did ruffle feathers. On one hand, it is a defense of the scene he represents rather than anything else, because dance floors are filled. The reaction was wildly out of proportion, but that is to be expected on stan Twitter, sadly.
