Major Lazer brings out M.I.A. to perform ‘Paper Planes’ at Coachella

Coachella erupts as M.I.A. steps on stage with Major Lazer—reviving “Paper Planes” in a surprise no one saw coming

A nostalgic jolt has electrified the desert. As Major Lazer expanded their brand recently, they have pulled off not only a fire set Sunday evening at the Main Stage, but one of many Coachella topics that’s flooding the news and Instagram feeds. During their high-energy set, the 3 and now 4 member band surprised fans by bringing out their old-timer M.I.A. for a live performance that instantly sent the crowd into a frenzy.

The unexpected reunion unfolded near the end of their set, when M.I.A. walked onstage to perform her iconic hit “Paper Planes”. The track has long been celebrated for its bold production and cultural commentary, eventually becoming a top hit on the charts in the late 2000’s, bringing another nostalgic moment along with Justin Bieber’s headlining set.

Fans quickly recognized where this all fluctuated, as M.I.A. and Diplo, the guy behind the production of the song, shared a complex creative history that has shaped some of their most defining work. Seeing the two reconnect on one of music’s biggest stages has felt like a full-circle moment.

“Paper Planes” has remained a cultural staple since its release, often praised for its distinctive sound design and layered messaging. Its unconventional use of sound effects did scare critics for years, blending satire with commentary in a way that has kept the song relevant well beyond its era.

This wasn’t the only surprise that left the Coachella audience in shock, along with those watching at home. Anyma had to call off his long anticipated debut of ‘Aedan’ due to the desert wind risking safety violations. Justin Bieber did what no one else would do in the industry and play a lot of his old songs on YouTube and put the fans in tearjearking shock. As for the DoLab, nobody expected John Summit to be the “Surprise” at the end and Anyma filling in with Marlon Hoffstadt-unexpecting.

M.I.A. gears up for the release of her upcoming album ‘M.I.7’, giving us a reminder of the “Bad Girl” living wild. If Coachella teaches fans anything aside from financial planning, and researching how to get the artist wristband, it’s that surprises can come anywhere at any stage any time, even when running around the entire site to even spot a celebrity influencer. With weekend 1 in recap mode, everyone’s now gearing up for weekend 2, wondering will there me more surprises along the way.
