Dubstep fans outraged by deadmau5 comment on Svdden Death video
Deadmau5 sparks debate after viral festival comment as Svdden Death and fans respond to critique
Notorious online provocateur Deadmau5 strikes again, this time sparking debate across dubstep circles after a brief comment aimed at a festival clip. The comment, posted under a video of Svdden Death’s VOYD performance at Ultra Music Festival, quickly gained traction.
The six word reaction, “what a bad day to have ears,” was a Deadmau5, that is dry, blunt, and instantly polarizing. Known for his long history of online jabs and unfiltered takes, the comment was on brand for his mix of critique and comedy over the years.
Svdden Death responded by pointing directly to Deadmau5 as a key influence behind the project, making it clear that VOYD didn’t exist in a vacuum. Rather than taking offense, he acknowledged the comment while reinforcing the respect he has for an artist who helped inspire his work.
VOYD, Svdden Death’s darker alias, leans heavily into high-intensity dubstep. In particular, his sound includes distorted sound design and horror-driven visuals. His project is widely known for the imagery, which is a stark contrast to Deadmau5’s roots.
Fan reactions were more emotional. Some framed the comment as out-of-touch criticism, questioning Deadmau5’s relevance. Others pointed to Deadmau5’s nature and rebuffed the idea that his commenting on the artist is a good thing.
Deadmau5 did later clarify that his comment was not a direct attack, reinforcing respect for Svdden Death. Subtronics even chimed in, noting, “i’ve told u this before, but before i met u i’ve always planned in my head saying “mr deadmau5 i love ur music its a big part of the reason i make music myself, speaking of i hope to god you never f— hear it”. This moment continues to show Deadmau5’s role as both a provocateur and pillar.
