Mako serves as executive producer on ILLENIUM’s new album ODYSSEY
ILLENIUM and Mako: a match made in EDM heaven.
In a post that quietly electrified the bass community, producer and songwriter Mako revealed he served as executive producer on ILLENIUM’s newest album ‘ODYSSEY,’ while also acting as music director for the artist’s upcoming Las Vegas Sphere residency. The announcement confirmed what longtime listeners have suspected for years: the emotional DNA of ILLENIUM’s music has always been a shared language between Nick Miller, known to the EDM community as ILLENIUM, and Alex Seaver, known as Mako.
The partnership between the two artists is far from novel. Their collaborations date back to 2018’s “Don’t Give Up on Me,” a record that helped define the genre’s blend of cinematic songwriting and festival-scale production. But ‘ODYSSEY‘ marks a deeper creative integration. Rather than contributing a single topline or feature, Mako helped shape the album’s narrative arc, sonic palette, and emotional pacing from the ground up.
That role makes perfect sense given Mako’s background. A Juilliard-trained composer and the executive music producer behind ‘Arcane,’ Mako specializes in translating electronic music into story. His productions often feel like film scores, evolving through tension, release, and catharsis instead of traditional drop-centric structures. ILLENIUM’s music has always leaned toward storytelling, and ‘ODYSSEY‘ feels like the logical culmination of that philosophy: less a playlist of singles and more a continuous emotional experience.
Vocally, Mako also appears throughout the project, including on ‘Into The Dark,’ reinforcing the personal nature of the collaboration. For ILLENIUM, whose career has frequently explored recovery, vulnerability, and healing, bringing in a trusted creative partner elevates the sincerity listeners connect with.
The timing is notable as well. With a Sphere residency approaching, the album seems designed for immersive presentation. Executive production here does not just mean songwriting oversight. It implies world-building: how the music will feel in a physical environment, how visuals interact with sound, and how the audience journeys through it.
Ultimately, ‘ODYSSEY’ reads less like a standard EDM album and more like a co-authored statement piece. While ILLENIUM provides the emotional core, Mako shapes the cinematic framework. And together, they push melodic bass further toward experiential storytelling, proving the genre’s future may lie not in louder drops, but in deeper connection.
