Gesaffelstein accepts first Grammy win in full masked costume

This major Grammy-winning milestone is thanks to his remix of Lady Gaga’s hit, “Abracadabra.”

Gesaffelstein has won his first-ever Grammy in the Best Remixed Recording category for his “Abracadabra – Gesaffelstein Remix.” This marks a milestone for the French DJ, as it is a major recognition for the contribution he has made to the electronic dance industry.

Known for his unmistakable aesthetic, Gesaffelstein showed up to the Grammys wearing a black mask, which can be recognized as the one he previously wore on his Enter the Gamma World Tour last year. The mask is believed to be created by Ironhead Studio, which is a specialist in character and creature mask creation. 

Gesaffelstein arrived on the Grammys red carpet dressed as his dark persona in a black tailored suit. Upon accepting the award, he shook hands with the presenters on stage and was handed his Grammy. Instead of making a speech, he took a bow, raised his award in the air, blew a kiss, and then exited the stage.

This isn’t the first time a masked French DJ has accepted an award in silence. In 2014, Daft Punk won their first Grammy for their tune “Get Lucky,” with Pharrell Williams. Instead of speaking into the microphone, they allowed Pharrell to say his thank yous while they stood there silently.

This year, three major categories broadcast dance music producers. Gesaffelstein won the Best Remixed Recording Grammy, beating fellow nominees such as KAYTRANADA, Ron Trent, Chris Lake, and David Guetta. The Best Dance/Electronic Recording win was bagged by none other than Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker for his record “End of Summer.” Other tracks nominated were “No Cap” by Disclosure & Anderson .Paak, “Victory Lap” by Fred again.., Skepta, and PlaqueBoyMax, “SPACE INVADOR” by KAYTRANADA, and “Voltage” by Skrillex.

Finally, FKA twigs won Best Dance/Electronic Album for EUSEXUA. The other albums nominated were Fred again..’s ten days, Fancy That by PinkPantheress, Inhale / Exhale by RÜFÜS DU SOL, and Skrillex’s, F*** U SKRILLEX YOU THINK UR ANDY WARHOL BUT UR NOT!! <3.
