Martin Ikin suffers 5-week disaster during trip to Thailand

Thailand: 1 and Martin Ikin: 0

What was meant to be a restorative getaway to Thailand turned into a five-week ordeal for British DJ and producer Martin Ikin, who recently shared a candid account of his experience with fans via social media. The veteran electronic artist revealed that only one week of his extended trip resembled the escape he had planned, while the remaining four devolved into a cascading series of health scares, travel chaos, and sheer bad luck.

According to Ikin’s post, week one delivered the “amazing time” travelers hope for. That momentum quickly collapsed in week two, when he was struck with what he described as the worst flu of his 52-year life. As if illness weren’t enough, liquid damage destroyed his laptop, an especially painful blow for a producer whose studio setup is central to his livelihood.

Week three escalated further as the flu turned into severe sinusitis, requiring multiple doctor visits and antibiotics. Travel between Thai islands compounded the misery: an exhausting 11-hour boat and car journey from Koh Samui to Phuket ended with a car accident after another driver crashed into the vehicle. Week four brought a full-body allergic rash caused by the antibiotics, leaving Ikin unable to tolerate sunlight or heat, an ironic twist given Thailand’s tropical climate.

By week five, Ikin was battling norovirus, leaving him bedridden, unable to eat or sleep, and simply counting the days until he could fly home. “Worst four weeks I can ever remember,” he wrote, closing his post with gratitude for safely making it back.

The ordeal struck a nerve across the dance community, particularly given Ikin’s stature. A staple of the electronic music scene since 1991, he is a classically trained jazz pianist whose technical foundation has shaped a prolific career in house and tech house. Known for club anthems like “Hooked,” “How I Feel,” and “Headnoise (Get Hype),” Ikin has released music on elite labels including Toolroom, Defected, and Catch & Release, and remixed artists ranging from Mariah Carey to Basement Jaxx.

Despite the brutal setback, fans have flooded Ikin with messages of support. If anything, the episode underscores the resilience behind the music and the reminder that even seasoned road warriors aren’t immune to life’s most unrelenting curveballs.
