‘Mini Sphere’ venue planned for National Harbor in Maryland

Mini Sphere Maryland is set to light up National Harbor with a bold, high-tech entertainment experience the region has never seen before.

A smaller but still spectacular version of the iconic Sphere may soon be coming to the D.C. area. Sphere Entertainment Co. has announced plans for the world’s first “mini-Sphere” at National Harbor, Maryland, with an expected opening in 2030. While scaled down, the ambition is anything but small.

The proposed venue would seat about 6,000 people, roughly one-third the size of the Las Vegas Sphere, yet it would still cost more than $1 billion to build. According to the company, the mini-Sphere could generate around $1 billion a year in economic activity through concerts, sporting events, corporate gatherings, and immersive shows.

Located on eight acres near the MGM casino at National Harbor, the spherical venue would be hard to miss. Its LED-covered exterior would be visible from Reagan National Airport flight paths and even offer sight lines toward the Washington Monument. Developers behind National Harbor’s dining, shopping, and ferris wheel have already signed on, signaling a major expansion of the area’s entertainment scene.

Inside, visitors can expect the same jaw-dropping technology that made the Las Vegas Sphere famous. That means massive LED visuals, immersive sound, and sensory effects, just with fewer seats. Shows and experiences could even travel between Sphere locations, from concerts and artist residencies to UFC, boxing, and large-scale productions like classic films reimagined for the format.

The project comes with significant public incentives, estimated around $200 million, and is expected to create thousands of construction and long-term jobs. Local leaders see it as a bold move to boost tourism and reinvigorate Prince George’s County after several recent economic setbacks.

If approved, the National Harbor mini-Sphere would be the first of its kind anywhere in the world, bringing futuristic entertainment and a glowing new landmark to the region.

The music community and industry has a special place in my heart and I love exploring the depths. EDC Las Vegas is my favorite festival and this year will be my sixth time attending. Some other recent festivals I've been are Ultra, Elements, Lost Lands, Electric Forest, and Arc. I've been getting more into experimental bass, but techno and house will always have my heart. <3
