Dance music community mourns the passing of The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir

The music community lost a legend this past weekend. Grateful Dead’s Bobby Weir tragically passed away, leaving behind a legacy that influenced artists of all genres.

Rest in peace, Bobby Weir. One of the founding members of the Grateful Dead tragically passed away after a long but quiet battle with cancer this past weekend at the age of 78. Joining his fellow bandmates, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Donna Jean, and Pigpen in the great gig in the sky. “May the four winds blow you safely home,” Bobby. Having played in the Dead for over 60 years, Weir influenced not only modern-day artists’ sound, like John Mayer, who played alongside the talent in Dead & Company, but also dance artist LP Giobbi.

Dozens of artists have posted tributes to Weir, noting that his dedication to the scene from sound to culture is something out of a movie. A real-life musical hero, everyone remembers the first time they heard the Dead. LP Giobbi wrote a touching post, writing, “No band has had a greater emotional or musical influence on me than Grateful Dead, and I know I’m far from alone in that. Their music was woven into my life before I was born.” In the moving message, she shares how “profoundly inspired” he made her feel, creating a Deadhead community over his generational tenure. Once a Deadhead, always a Deadhead.

John Mayer kept it short and sweet, in true Bobby fashion, in a simple post that Bobby would have appreciated. “Okay Bob. I’ll do it your way. Fkn’ A… Thanks for letting me ride alongside you. It sure was a pleasure. If you say it’s not the end, then I’ll believe you. I’ll meet you in the music. Come find me anytime.” Having played alongside Weir for the past decade, Mayer and Weir’s relationship was that of mentor, friend, and bandmate. The two on stage were symbiotic, playing off of each other and jamming as if Mayer had been on stage with Weir his entire career. Bobby Weir was a once-in-a-lifetime talent, and his presence will be missed. It is rare that another talent like his will come along in this lifetime.
