OddKidOut shares personal story about working with OWSLA and Skrillex

OddKidOut has opened up about the moment a connection with Skrillex changed his path and led him into the OWSLA world.

OddKidOut’s rise feels like one of those stories you hear about and still can’t believe is real. While living in Philadelphia at just 21 years old, he was making dark, emotional bass music that slowly started spreading online. One of the people paying attention happened to be Skrillex.

Skrillex discovered OddKidOut through his early releases and live finger drumming clips, instantly connecting with the raw energy in his sound. Instead of a long industry process, Skrillex kept it simple and told him to come out to Los Angeles and stay at his house. For a young producer from Philly, it was a huge leap that would change everything.

the somewhat untold story of my time with @owsla and @skrillex it’s not every day that an opportunity like that arises. being plucked up out of Philly and replanted in the midst of greatness is enough to change your DNA, and it did. there was a lot of soul searching, a lot of imposter syndrome, a lot of learning. my life now is “pre-owsla” and “post-owsla”. that’s how defining of a moment it was for me as a musician, a man, a human. the Solstice EP is probably the most important body of work ive ever made.

That move quickly turned into something official. OddKidOut was signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label. In 2017, he released his EP Solstice on OWSLA, which put him firmly on the map.

Solstice showed off what makes OddKidOut stand out. The project blended dark, gritty bass with lush melodies and emotional depth, pulling from his background as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist. It felt heavy but personal, club-ready while still hitting you in the feelings.

After that breakthrough, his career kept gaining momentum. He went on to release music with BASSRUSH, Fool’s Gold, and Monstercat, including the track “Cinema,” which became the title song for the game Rocket League. Each release pushed his sound further while staying true to his moody, percussion-driven style.

Now based in Los Angeles, OddKidOut is just getting started. With high-energy live shows, genre-blending influences, and a story that started with a DM from Skrillex, his journey feels like one a lot of young producers dream about. The underdog made it, and he’s still climbing.

Hey everyone, I'm Neil! I first joined the dance community back in 2019 when my friend dragged me to Moonrise, my first-ever music festival, and I became hooked ever since. I like to dabble in most genres with my favorites being tech house and melodic techno. When it comes to studio output, Camelphat is part of my daily listening rotation and for a live performance, I'll never miss a Solomun set. You can likely catch me on the dance floor somewhere in Brooklyn!
