Gene Farris cancels tour dates after ‘serious medical emergency’

Gene Farris has cancelled his appearance at HBC 2025 due to a medical emergency, and Kyle Kinch stepped in to keep the groves alive.

Hallucination Before Christmas (HBC) 2025 hit a last-minute curveball last week when Chicago house legend Gene Farris had to withdraw due to a serious medical emergency. The veteran DJ, who described HBC as “one of his favorite parties,” was excited to return to Oogie Boogie’s Dungeon this winter. While the news saddened fans, it came with a silver lining. Kyle Kinch, Farris’ friend and frequent collaborator, stepped in to keep the room’s groove perfectly intact.

The HBC team took to Instagram to wish Farris a swift recovery and ensure the night would still run smoothly. “We’ll hold it down and welcome Gene to return next time,” they said, setting an optimistic tone for the weekend. It’s the kind of community spirit that defines both HBC and house music itself—adaptable, inclusive, and ready to groove.

For those who might be new to Farris, he’s a true cornerstone of Chicago house. Gene has continuously pushed boundaries through a soulful fusion of beats on labels like Relief, Defected, and Dirtybird. Beyond his countless originals and chart-toppers, Farris has become a mentor to rising artists and a fixture in club culture. Specifically, his sets are known for blending feel-good nostalgia with fresh, forward-moving grooves.

Taking the reins at Oogie’s Dungeon was no small task, but few could rise to it like Kyle Kinch. The NYC-based DJ/producer has carved a unique lane with his seamless integration of jazz, disco, and classic house influences. With music on heavyweight labels like Realm Records and Nervous, Kinch is famous for his upbeat energy and timeless rhythm. His breakout moment came in 2018 with The Manchester EP, which made him the first non-Gorgon City release on Realm. Furthermore, it also earned him support from heavyweights like Camelphat, Fisher, and David Guetta.

With over 35 artists across four rooms, HBC continues to embody playful chaos where Christmas and Halloween collide. And though the event was certainly not the same without Gene’s presence, Kyle Kinch’s set proved the spirit of HBC never skips a beat. Having grown up just an earshot from Ultra Miami's venue Bayfront Park, it was next to impossible for me not to fall in love with electronic music. My love for music was evidently strong enough for me to write my college essay on festival culture and continue attending Ultra for 12 consecutive years (still counting). As an avid traveler, I'm definitely not afraid to hop on a plane for a music event. My current bucket list festivals right now are Tomorrowland in Belgium, Cercle Festival in France, Kappa Futur in Italy, and Sonus in Croatia. Though the list could go on forever, some of my favorite artists are Franky Wah, BICEP, Cassian, and Mochakk.
