Who is DJ Jazzy Jeff?
DJ Jazzy Jeff’s legacy as an artist and talent mentor is built on innovation, resilience, and constant reinvention.
Jeffrey Allen Townes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1960. Later on, Townes would become known in hip-hop history as a household name, DJ Jazzy Jeff. He helped shape the sound of modern turntablism before there was even a name for the technique. Turntablism uses DJ turntables as musical instruments.
The artist has built his legendary reputation through his creative style and clear adaptation to the creative process and evolution as a musical pioneer between hip-hop and electronic dance music. Specifically, in blending early hip-hop with funk, soul, disco breaks, combined with his signature skilled scratching.
In the 1980s, Jeffrey Allen started spinning at Philadelphia block parties or basement parties. Notably, the hip-hop scene was still looked at as “raw and local”. Quickly, Philadelphia became Jeffrey’s playground, especially when he met young rapper Will Smith.

Will Smith and Jeffrey Allen became the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. This partnership would go on to change the trajectory of their lives and hip-hop itself. Together, the dynamic duo brought storytelling, humor, and clean lyricism.
In 1989, their track “Parents Just Don’t Understand” earned them the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance. Notably, his milestone would help push rap into the mainstream music culture.
After Will Smith shifted his focus more into acting, DJ Jazzy Jeff continued performing and creating the path for turntablists.

Along the journey, DJ Jazzy Jeff developed his signature move, “transform scratch”, a fast rhythmic cutting style. The cutting style became a staple sound for aspiring DJs in the ’80s and early ’90s.
As music technology evolved, Jazzy Jeff bridges old-school craftsmanship with modern sound in his live performances. Today, the household name continues to mentor young talent in DJ education, runs his production company, A Touch of Jazz.
