Spotify Removes 75 Million AI-Generated Spam Tracks From Platform

Giant music streaming platform announces new enforcements being made in order to protect listeners and creatives from harmful generative AI.

Music streaming platform Spotify strengthens AI protection for artists and music producers with a series of measures. This will include enforcing impersonation violations, a new spam-filtering system, and AI disclosures for music with industry-standard credits.

The music streaming platform posts an announcement on its website titled “Fighting Impersonation, Spam, and Deception”. Essentially, Spotify announces that they have removed 75 million “spammy” tracks in the last twelve months alone.

Furthermore, the mega music platform has noticed over time that generative AI technology has grown too quickly and created a plethora of “bad actors and content farms”.

Spotify’s intention is to maintain a platform where artists and producers are in control of how or if they choose to incorporate AI into their creative processes. The music platform wishes to continue protecting creatives against deception, spam, and impersonation. Moreover, Spotify intends to provide listeners with transparency about the music they hear.

Why some AI Generative content is harmful

When AI is pushing ‘slop’ into the ecosystem, it degrades the user experience and deceives listeners by generating “vocal deepfakes” of other artists, thus diverting royalties to bad actors. This has created an unsettling feeling for creatives.

The growth of AI has become harmful for authentic artists working to build their careers. Specifically for the reason that this kind of AI content degrades, as well as for the user experience.

Solutions created by Spotify

Spotify will support the new industry standard with AI disclosures through music credits. This standard will give artists a way to indicate where and how AI plays a role in the creation of a track. Whether it’s vocals, instrumentation, or post-production.
