Tommie Sunshine slams Burning Man over PPP loan, executive pay, and political stance
The veteran DJ and cultural commentator criticized Burning Man’s finances and nonprofit status in a viral Instagram post, drawing attention to the festival’s federal loan, executive salaries, and political controversies.
Dance music figure Tommie Sunshine has taken direct aim at Burning Man following its 2025 event, accusing the iconic desert festival of benefiting from government support while maintaining its nonprofit status. In an Instagram post that has quickly gained traction, Sunshine highlighted what he calls “the jig” behind the celebrated countercultural gathering.
Sunshine’s post pointed to a $2.7 million federal PPP loan Burning Man received, along with its $45 million in annual revenue and $30 million in assets. He also noted $2.4 million in executive salaries, with the highest reportedly earning $790,000 a year. According to Sunshine, those figures place top executives in the top 5% of U.S. incomes, contradicting the festival’s image as a grassroots, alternative event.
Beyond finances, Sunshine raised concerns about Burning Man’s nonprofit status, which provides tax exemptions and access to grants. He criticized the organization for what he described as “limited liability for attendees’ safety and well-being.” The post also addressed a 2024 controversy when Burning Man organizers removed a pro-Palestine sculpture and replaced it with one honoring Israel’s Nova festival, despite the group’s stated apolitical stance.
The outspoken DJ captioned his post, “the jig is up folks,” cementing his message of frustration with what he sees as hypocrisy. Sunshine, who describes himself as a “RAVE advocate/activist” and “sub-cultural historian,” has long been vocal about issues within dance music and festival culture.

Commenters on his post echoed the sentiment. One pointed out Burning Man’s environmental footprint on Indigenous land, citing the traditional territories of the Numu, Nuwu, and Newe peoples. Another bluntly added, “As a longtime hater it’s nice to see Burning Man getting dragggged.”
The post marks another chapter in the ongoing debate over Burning Man’s role in modern culture: whether as a beacon of community and art or a multimillion-dollar enterprise at odds with its own ideals. Burning Man has also been in the news this year after an alleged murder took place on the grounds, and a woman gave birth unexpectedly.
