What DJs have won GRAMMYs?
A growing number of DJs have achieved one of music’s highest honors: winning a GRAMMY Award. But do you know which ones?
The Recording Academy has historically focused on traditional musicians and vocalists. However, the past two decades have been an impressive breakthrough for electronic music and DJ culture. Unsurprisingly, several DJs have started earning GRAMMY recognition for their innovative work.
Daft Punk stands out as one of the most celebrated DJ acts in GRAMMY history. Popular for their futuristic sound and iconic robot helmets, the French duo have won multiple GRAMMYs, including 2014 Album of the Year for “Random Access Memories”. Their influence on electronic music is undoubtedly profound, with global anthems like “Get Lucky” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”.
Another pioneering duo, The Chemical Brothers have also received recognition multiple times by the Recording Academy. Their energetic fusion of techno, hip-hop, and house has earned them several GRAMMYs, including Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2020. Their innovative live shows and genre-defining tracks like “Hey Boy Hey Girl” have cemented their status as leaders in the scene.
Skrillex is a standout solo DJ who has won a record four GRAMMYs in the dance/electronic categories. His aggressive, bass-heavy style helped popularize dubstep in the U.S., and his collaborations have expanded the reach of electronic music. Furthermore, Diplo has also found GRAMMY success, both as a solo artist and in collaborations.
In 2022, Black Coffee won the GRAMMY for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his record “Subconsciously, ” making him the first African artist to win in this category. Other notable DJ winners include the Kazakh DJ Imanbek, who became the first Central Asian recipient of the award in 2021.
These achievements reflect the growing influence of DJs and electronic music producers in mainstream culture. As the genre continues to evolve, more DJs are likely to join the ranks of GRAMMY winners, further blurring the lines between traditional musicianship and the art of DJing.
