California politicians now recognize June as ‘Electronic Dance Music Month’

California officially recognizes EDM’s impact with bipartisan support, a landmark celebration of the state’s rave culture.

California has officially declared June 2025 as “Electronic Dance Music Month”. This marks the first time the state is formally recognizing EDM’s cultural and economic significance. Assembly Majority Whip Mark González and State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez introduced the bipartisan resolution in May. It quickly gained support from 74 co-sponsors across party lines.

Mark González announced the declaration on social media and emphasized the importance of the EDM community. He highlighted that dance music is more than festivals; it is a vibrant culture built on peace, love, unity, and respect. According to González, these events create inclusive spaces for people from all walks of life. They allow attendees to express themselves freely and proudly. He added that EDM gave his generation a space to be themselves. It gave them a voice in a world that tried to silence them.

The official EDM Month ceremony featured Pasquale Rotella, founder of Insomniac, whom officials honored for shaping California’s dance music landscape. Under his leadership, Insomniac hosts over 1,000 events worldwide, with California serving as a key hub of activity.

State leaders acknowledged the significant cultural and economic impact of electronic music events. Festivals draw hundreds of thousands of attendees and generate substantial revenue for local communities, illustrating the genre’s positive impact. The genre contributes to the economy and unites diverse communities across California.

This move represents a shift in perception. Decades ago, government officials were wary of rave culture and large-scale EDM events. Now, California is embracing the scene and its values. This contrasts sharply with the stigma around raves in the ’90s and early 2000s.

Electronic Dance Music Month will be an annual celebration of the genre’s legacy and future in California. California’s recognition of EDM sends a proud message to fans and artists alike. It shows that state leaders value their contributions and that the scene is here to stay.
