Create Music Group acquires Monstercat in massive deal
Create Music Group has acquired the independent EDM label Monstercat, unlocking new funding and resources for electronic artists worldwide.
Create Music Group, the powerhouse label, distribution company, and entertainment network, recently announced they’d acquired Monstercat, a highly influential independent electronic music label. This acquisition means that Monstercat now has access to a wide array of CMG’s assets, including capital, an expanded media portfolio, and other aspects of their global infrastructure.
Monstercat, known for their work with Kaskade, Alan Walker, Vicetone, Punctual, WHIPPED CREAM, DJ DIESEL, Koven, and more, has been making major waves in the EDM scene since 2011. The company has earned a reputation for its fair deal structures and ability to offer one-stop licensing by controlling both master and publishing rights. The company will continue to operate independently under the leadership of President Daniel Turcotte, VP Orri Sachar, and Director of Finance Rob Hill, with founders Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen remaining in advisory roles.
Between their three labels, Uncaged, Instinct, and Silk, Monstercat has proven itself as an artist-first company dedicated to building sustainable and long-term careers for its artists. CMG has committed to investing $50 million over the next two years to fund Monstercat’s artist development, artist advances, and platform support across the roster to help new signings and aid in their long-term career growth.
Create Music Group’s digital reach is massive, with 200 billion monthly music streams on digital service providers. Its subsidiaries include Label Engine, an independent distribution platform with 75,000 artists and 5,000 label clients, and Flighthouse, a digital entertainment brand with 300 million followers across all socials.
According to Orri Sachar, Monstercat’s VP, “this partnership gives us the flexibility to offer more creative pathways for our artists. Whether you’re releasing your first track or scaling an established brand, we now have the infrastructure to help artists succeed at every level.” Together, Monstercat and CMG will continue to work towards helping talented electronic artists achieve their dreams.
