Odesza surprise releases Severence collab
ODESZA has teamed up with Apple TV+ to remix the theme song of the must-see series Severance, paired with an eight-hour visual/audio odyssey.
ODESZA just dropped a surprise project that has fans of both ambient music and Severance buzzing. The electronic duo took the eerie theme from the hit Apple TV+ show and turned it into two versions. Titled “Music to Refine To,” the mix runs a manageable 23 minutes, while the extended version loops for eight hours as part of an audiovisual experience.
Harrison Mills, one-half of ODESZA, explained that they wanted to stay true to the show’s unsettling atmosphere while adding their own twist. “We put different chords under a lot of [Theodore Shapiro’s] melodies, while also trying to stay true to the vibe of the show, which is kind of creepy and subversive,” he told Billboard. The result is a soundtrack that feels immersive, dark, and hypnotic.
Listening to the eight-hour version feels like falling into a dream—or maybe a nightmare. Even Severance executive producer Ben Stiller gave it his stamp of approval, posting on social media, “This is taking me to another place…”
The Severance soundtrack has already made a name for itself by featuring a mix of iconic and unexpected songs. From The Stone Roses to Joe McPhee, the show’s music choices help shape its eerie, uneasy world. It makes sense that a duo like ODESZA, known for blending emotion with electronic production, would take that energy even further.
This release feels like the perfect fit for a show that thrives on tension and mystery. Fans are already analyzing every layer of the music, trying to figure out if there are any hidden messages. If there’s one thing Severance has taught us, it’s that nothing is ever just what it seems.
Whether or not ODESZA’s rework holds secret clues, it’s an experience worth diving into. The longer version might not solve the mysteries of Lumon Industries, but it sure makes for a soundtrack to get lost in.
