The BPM Festival forced to cancel the remainder of 2025 edition
A combination of challenges has forced The BPM Festival to cancel the remainder of 2025 festivities.
Costa Rica’s The BPM Festival will no longer be able to fulfill the remaining days of the 2025 festival. The event was originally scheduled for January 8th-12th, so organizers cut the festival 3 days short. A blissful escape in the Playa Avellana quickly turned into a refund-seeking opportunity.
The BPM Festival faces local opposition, making their event a target for residents to express their concerns for noise levels and environmental impacts. Locals are said to have tried withholding necessary permits as well as influencing the production to return to Tamarindo just days before the event. A petition signed by 183 community members was presented to local authorities, outlining the repercussions from the 2024 festival, which swayed decisions to allow this year’s festival to continue.
The events from 2024 raise controversy, as Tamarindo officials originally turned down the event due to street brawls and claims of stolen cars. This brought tension between the organization and local police. The BPM Festival released a statement “there are forces at play in Costa Rica that appear determined for us and other electronic events to discontinue or fail.”
Additionally, locals expressed concerns in relation to safety and travel congestion. Following the events from last years festival, The BPM Festival is facing greater resistance when organizing electronic music events in Costa Rica. This creates challenges for ticket holders and organizers alike, due to the uncertainty of future events in this region.
Consequently, the organizers are anticipating on rolling out refunds to ticket holders January 15th. Despite local authorities’ reassurances, the festival organizers shortened the events and completely canceled the remaining days. The BPM Festival cites the EDM industry as a potential target, as safety concerns from previous years also forced the 2025 Envision Festival to cancel.
Originally launching in 2008, The BPM Festival has faced cancellations in the past. A tragic shooting in a night club resulting in multiple deaths in 2017, which resulted in local government banning the festival all together. In 2021, restrictions on large gatherings following the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel the Costa Rica event. In 2023, their event in Brazil cancelled due to local authorities influencing their concerns with environmental impacts. It is tough to see what the future holds in terms of finding future locations for The BPM Festival to thrive in.
