Is Skrillex bringing back OWSLA?

Skrillex has teased several major career shifts with his latest Instagram post, leaving the Internet wondering: is he reviving OWSLA?

Multi-Grammy-winning producer Skrillex announced that his upcoming track “Heavy Heart” will be his final release before switching creative gears. But the most intriguing part?  Skrillex’s cryptic post and carousel of pictures may spell the revival of OWSLA on the horizon.

Skrillex hints that he’s entering “full focus” on upcoming projects, meaning the potential return of his legendary record label OWSLA. Started in 2011, OWSLA has had an unquestionable role in shaping modern dance music.  Through their forward-thinking ethos, Skrillex and OWSLA were instrumental in popularizing dubstep and pushing the limits of electronic music.

Skrillex’s post also mentions the conclusion of his 15-year contract with Atlantic Records, making way for an independent future. “Life is feeling a bit surreal,” he says, emphasizing a deep connection to his creative process and hinting at exciting things to come. This “new phase” seems like more than just a personal transition. Could it mean the return of OWLSA, the label that helped redefine electronic music in the 2010s?

Founded by Skrillex in 2011, OWSLA (pronounced “Owl-suh”) gained an illustrious reputation for its genre-defying sound. Launching the careers of artists like Dillon Francis, Zedd, and What So Not, it cultivated an avant-garde community of producers pushing boundaries in dance music. The label’s uncompromising artistic vision made it a central hub in the electronic scene, blending elements of dubstep, future bass, and house.

With the shift away from Atlantic, it’s possible that Skrillex is preparing to revive the label. Given its track record for discovering major names, OWSLA 2.0 would provide an incredible platform for new artists.

While Skrillex’s fans continue to speculate, the prospect of OWSLA’S revival is an exciting one. As Skrillex himself notes, he’s entering a phase where he’s “feeling every cell in [his] body.” Whether OWSLA will rise again or something greater awaits, one thing’s certain: Skrillex has big plans ahead. Having grown up just an earshot from Ultra Miami's venue Bayfront Park, it was next to impossible for me not to fall in love with electronic music. My love for music was evidently strong enough for me to write my college essay on festival culture and continue attending Ultra for 12 consecutive years (still counting). As an avid traveler, I'm definitely not afraid to hop on a plane for a music event. My current bucket list festivals right now are Tomorrowland in Belgium, Cercle Festival in France, Kappa Futur in Italy, and Sonus in Croatia. Though the list could go on forever, some of my favorite artists are Franky Wah, BICEP, Cassian, and Mochakk.
